Stupidnewbie question #9 - What is +P ?

Dumb gimmick! Kind of like saying Magnum rifles are marketing gimmicks too! You don't have any magnum rifles do ya?
Some people like to shoot ammo. that has just a little more umphh! Not all handguns are rated for it! I like to have the +P ammo. in my CCW just so if and when I gotta stop a bad guy, I only gotta hit 'em once, instead of twice!

Nope TR, so long as he (she) is still standing and I still have rounds available I'm still pulling the trigger, +P or not.

Not to hijack a thread, but...... A lot of so-called authorities suggest never using a hand load as a defensive round in that the liability is too high.

I have two almost identical S&W M640 357's that I have had mag-na-ported. They are my carry guns. In fact I'll bet many of you Colorado guys just thought I have a wart under my shirt just around the corner on my right side. Yep, a nice stainless steel wart.

I load a Speer Gold Dot 135gr. bullet that is intended for a short barrel 38SP. It has a thinner jacket at the front than the 125gr. Gold Dot. My load is hot and in wet telephone books I get tremendous expansion. I don't think any factory 125gr load will compare. My thought is that should I ever have to pull and use one of those little girls the liability issue is the least of my problems.

"Besides, your honor, I am old, feeble and I was in fear for my life".

Take 2!

No, it's not a gimmick. Just as better steels came out and different powders, some guns, the manufactures knew could handle the hotter loads,(primarily .38 specials that were never chambered for .357 to begin with.) And others, are advertised as +P rated but in limited doses. In other words, don't shoot exclusively +P ammo through it but it's find for duty or carry use.
I would not use +P in a Charter arms, but neither would I hesitate to use it in a S&W or Ruger steel frame gun, but a "lightweight" i.e. aluminum frame, I would be very cautious of.
Hope this helps.

Most manufacturers state whether a certain handgun can handle +P ammo anyways....always check with them first or read the owners manual.
