Subsonic .223 for fox

What do you guys think about subsonic .223 rounds for fox hunting? I'd probably be shooting a 55gr bullet at around 1050 fps or so. Is this adequate to cleanly take fox at close range? What kind of bullet should I use? In case you're wondering why subsonic, I just got a new can for my AR and shooting subsonic loads through that thing is just plain cool. I was thinking it also might be a fairly fur-friendly alternative to full power loads.

I'm afraid I have no idea, but I am intereseted, I had no idea you could get sub sonic centrefire loads. Do you reckon you could give me some sub sonic loads? I'll find out if they kill foxes for you LOL. I'd say they would, but as I said before I really have no idea.

I would say use a heavy bullet so that you can get a little more energy and range. Simple physics would say a heavier mass traveling at the same speed as a lighter mass would prove to be better. Plus it is a whole lot easier to get a heavy bullet subsonic. It would be very hard to keep a 40 gr to be subsonic. I would say use at least a 60gr bullet. That way you can put more powder in to make a more consistant burning load. Saw a tip in a reloading journal to fill the remainder of the empty case with cotton balls to keep the small amount of powder closer to the primer.

I agree with you about using heavier bullets, as the only real variable in terms of energy is bullet weight, since the velocity is held constant. So far I have been experimenting with 55 gr. bullets with pretty good success. I'm a little concerned that bullets much heavier than 55 gr will have a hard time stabilizing at low speeds. Guess I need to load some up and see. Could I expect a soft point bullet to expand much at all at these velocities? I'm hoping the bullet would stop inside the animal without leaving an exit wound. Tomorrow is the fox opener in Virginia, and I think I'm going to try some out. I'll let you guys know how it goes.

I don't think you need to worry about bullet type selection too much. As long as it is a well placed shot, it should go down whether it is a soft point or a Ballistic tip etc.

do a yahoo or google for blue dot 223 loads, been covered here several times, I have had nothing but good luck with the even without the can, but it wount cycle you action on an AR
