Substitute SP Primers for SP primers?

I have scoured the internet and want to ask some of you more experienced pistol loaders. Is there any harm in using a CCI400 SR Primer in place of a SP Primer? Loads that I am curious about are .38sp and .357 Mag. "Revolver" Any thoughts or personal experience? I have read about it on other forums, some say yeah, and some say no. What are your thoughts?

I have friends that swear that you can use this combination. They say the rifle primer is just the slightest bit longer but will work. And no ill effects.

I have never done this. I try my best to keep components in stock for myself.

Thanks for the reply joed.. I have read that in Large Rifle and pistol it could be a problem with sizing issues. But not in small rifle/pistol. Im just trying to glean information.

Large rifle and Large pistol are not the same height. Small rifle and pistol are the same size, except the pistol primers are typically thinner cups.

Yes Shane as noted in My earlier post. Just looking for real world experience switching small pistol for small rifle primers in a revolver.Just looking for actual results.

Well, I have some. Most pistols won’t strike hard enough for reliable ignition. You will only know once trying. There isnt any concern as far as pressure, etc.

And strange, you mention nothing of primer dimension or cup thickness is your earlier post, but yet you find it necessary to use condescending tones in your response to me. Strange, indeed.

I have done it. In a revolver you will be fine. Some hammerless semi-auto's can have issues with not being able to strike the primer hard enough and thus FTF.

Supposedly the CCI 400 and CCI 550 are one in the same. I have called CCI and talked with one of their Representatives about the two and they can find no difference on the spec sheets.

The CCI 400 performs fine in my .357 mag.

Shane if my fingers typed something sounding condecending it was not by any means intended to,and Im sorry if you read it that way. The comment above refers to the sizing difference between Large rifle and large pistol. I should have typed something better to show that. I see that Smokeless wrote pretty much what I read while researching this issue about CCI SR primers and that they seem to be the sameas their SP primers? I just found 2000 CCI primers that I had tucked away, and wanted to see how they would work in a revolver. Thanks for the responses, and once again Shane, sorry that what I typed didnt come out right. Stay safe over there!

I know that large rifle primers won't fully seat because of the size difference. I've accidentally grabbed some before and tried to prime my 44. They made a nice wobble....lol.

I've tried some small rifle primers in my wife's 380...not enough pop in the hammer. But I think your 357 will be fine with them.

I accept your apology, Grant, we've been working a ton here and I'm pretty home sick. So I may have read the response a bit off, as well.

Not trying to hijack the thread but if there's no difference then why when loading for the 22 hornet with lil gun small pistol primers are used? Not trying to start anything just curious and under-informed.

I know what you mean, I have a K Hornet barrel for my Contender and I used the same formula. I never shot it over a Chrono, but I didnt see a noticeable difference as far as accuracy goes. But if the CCI 400 primer is the same as a SP primer, I figured that I would give them a try. I never tried these CCI 400's in the Hornet.

The way I understand it, the CCI 400 is the same as the CCI 550 magnum pistol primer. The CCI 500 sp primer is not the same as the CCI 400/550. This only applies to CCI. It seems that CCI made the 550 mag primer specifically for the 357 mag and just used the 400 sr as a platform.
