So where I live in NY, we are about to fall under a high wind weather advisory for a day or two. I decided last night to just run out behind the house and take advantage of a SE wind to kill some boredom hours before bed. I also decided to just use hand calls.
I get on a high knob looking east and let out some dying rabbit on a sweet little closed reed call I grabbed from @Yotarunner a couple few years back and pick up a heat signature running the inside of a woodline to the north. I can tell it’s a Gray Fox so it’s safe but worth playing with. It stops at 75ish to assess things and I give it a few notes on another closed reed I picked up from @LONEHOWL at some point. The little guy charges in to about 25 yards. Here’s where it gets a little funny… i’m just looking at the whole deal as a cool experience when an 8:00 alarm goes off on my cell phone as a reminder to take out the trash! Lol… I pull out my lit up phone and silence the alarm and put it back in my pocket. I look back through my scope to see the little guy still there looking at me. I lip squeaked it to about 15 yards after all this! It finally took off and I went back to trying for a coyote. I let some howls rip on another beautiful call I grabbed from @LONEHOWL (Micro Howler in birdseye maple, love this call) and start scanning. Don’t I pick up that little gray again sitting at about 50 yards directly downwind of me just watching the show?!… lol…
Grays seem to be a little suicidal most times. Maybe they just know they’re safe with me? No coyotes but a pretty cool time just playing around. Sure beat sitting on the couch!
