I got up early and loaded and left Tomcats to meet up with Yoter about a hour south of where he lives!!
Least he aint working this time!! Ha ha
I get there and they have already spotted 2 yotes!! I get collars on and road the stags!! It froze pretty hard so i have to wait for a while to run the stags or they wont have any feet left!!
I get on the north side and watching for a few mins and see the hounds go in a small patch near town!! wasnt long i hear them open and the yote breaks out south!! Its a real brite red yote, The tracking wasnt very good yet with it being froze so hard!!
I send Rhino, Hunter and Sandy up a ditch that i seen the yote go into!! They start barking and some one saw the yote sneak out east!! Took them over a hour the fallow the track!! The yote crossed north so i hit the north road to stop it cause the next road was a bad hard slab road!!
The yote never came out of the ditch and the hounds were so far behind it!! so i send Digger ,June and Marie south up a fence row that goes into the same ditch!! Its starting to thaw some now and the hounds open up!! The yote makes the east road and some guys dump a truck load of hounds and when my hounds made the road it got all messed up and none of the hounds stayed with the yote!!
Mike Scott spots a yote up on a hill in the same section but its a diff yote!!
we let the first yote go and Yoter walks hounds out to the one on the hill!! I get in place and he hollers when the yote is up running and his hounds are in hot pursuit!!
The yote is heading for the south east corner and i get there in time so the stags can see it!!
I pull up to a drive way and send them!! That race was over pretty fast!! The yote was ducking and turning and liz nailed it!! My terriers was a nut case in the truck so i let them out!! Ha ha

from the left is Frosty,Sleepy,Liz Yoters Little piggy hound,Ace, Casey and Babe on the bottom!!

Get the hounds loaded up and got them a drink!! Find all the back hounds and some one sends a few hounds up the ditch where the last yote went into!!
Its not long and the race has started again!!
That red yote is heading for the south east corner just like that last one did!!
I get pulled up there to the same drive way that i sent the stags on the last one and send them again!! This time the yote was out there a little further and it made a heck of a run!! My hound Libby was really putting a show on!! That yote was ducking and dodging and Libby was glued right on its tail!!
The yote made a 180 turn on her and she stayed right with it!! It was going to cross the road behind me now and there must of been 5 trucks there watching the whole race!! They all crossed the road in high gear and that yote was still doing the ducking!!
Some of the guys got hounds out and sent them to the race!! I think they must of thought the yote was going to win this race but Libby wasnt giving up!! 1/4 mile she finally got it nocked down but was so far ahead of the other stags the yote got up and was rolling again!! They gained some ground and she nocked it down a 2nd time and that ended the race!!
I was really proud of Libby with the way she ran there and stayed right with it!! Just like she knew she had a audience watching her!!
This is #2 in 20 mins!!

SAMMY-frosty2nd.JPG

I get them loaded and a drink of water and just get the door shut and some one hollars on the radio that 2 hounds just crossed west right on a yote!!
same section as the first 2!! I make the west road and get turned around and here they come!!
coming right at me but going to cross at a angle in front of me!!
I send the poodles again and when they crossed in front of me my My Emma pup was leading the race!! They went over a little nob so i didnt see the catch!! A guy down the road could see them and said they got him!!
we get walked out and Emma has ahold of a leg on the yote!! That is the first time ever that she has pulled hair!!
She is a little over a year old!!

Emma is the darker hound that has ahold of the leg

That is # 3 for the stags with the last 2 being back to back with no rest!!
I wasnt going to run them any more and give them a rest!! They were plum wore out!!
Some guys get south about 3 miles and send some hounds up a ditch!! wasnt long and the race was on!!
The yote and hounds are heading east hard!! The cross the east road and some guys adds more hounds!!
They make the next road and they are hollering for me to get there and shutt it down !! Its a real bad hard slab hi way!!
I get there and can see the yote coming!! The stags see it but there is a simi coming at me!!
I get pulled over and wait for the big truck to get pass me!! The yote is a 100 yds off the road and turns when the truck passes!! I dont see any cars coming so i send them!!
The yote runs right along the hi way and 2 stags run the road trying to cut it off!! They all get in the field and the yote decides to cross the hi way!! On man its gets scary now!!
They run right along the hi way for about a 1/2 mile and when the yote crosses there is a van coming!! Libby is about 40 ft behind the yote and closing the gap!!
The Van splits the yote and hounds!! If that dont put knots in your stomach watching that!!!
well some how they all made it safe and Libby rolls the yote out in the field!!
I seen Sleepy and Liz do a summer sault when they crossed the ditch!! they hit it pretty hard!!
The yote got back up and was heading right for a house!! with the stags right on its butt!!
I get pulled in the drive !!now this is a all asphault drive way with nice flower beds and i pull up to the house and here comes the yote and hounds right at me!!
I am parked less then 10 ft from the back door and the yote went right pass me and the hounds caught it up against the house right next to me!!
I holler for yoter to get in and help me and see if he has a empty hole in his dog box!!
( he did) I grab the yote by the back of its neck and back and they start pulling hounds off!! ( Now this is alot live yote!! LOL)
They are in a flower bed up against the house!!
I get the yote in yoters dog box and all the stags loaded in my truck!! A little blood on the siding and one light bulb for a night light got broke!!
I nock on the door and no one home!! The guy in charge of the group that i was hunting with said that the guy that lives there would ok with this and he would call him and tell him what happened!! No time for pics on this catch!!
I loaded up and headed for home with some tired hounds!!
Yoter called me later and said they turned that yote loose later and turned some young hounds out to run it and it wouldnt run!! I had that yote off the stags in less then a min and that just shows how fast they put a yote down!! Sleepy and frosty were the main hounds on the head and they must of really put the clamps on it!!
Yoter said that the hounds caught one more after i left!! Now the 5 hour drive home!! The stags never stuck theirs heads out till i got gas 45 mins from home!!
4 catches in less then 2 hours with the same set really takes the goody out of them!!
I had today off so i run here at home which is friday and got after one!!
I turned Hunter,Digger and Sandy loose in my honey hole!!
Hunter opened on a cold track and 20 mins later they were jumped and heading south!!
They crossed east on the south side. I am by my self and its hard trying to stay with them!!
I finally see them cross south and head for a place on the south west corner where they like to cross!!
I am sitting there and can hear the hounds coming!! 10 mins later here comes the yote going to cross in front of me!! I get the stags to see it and send them!! the yote is angling and going to cross about a 1/4 in front of me!! All the stags head for the yote except Liz and Sleepy!! They run right down the road and was going to cut the yote off!! When the yote crossed the road liz was so close to Tboning it!! You couldnt of fit your hand between the two!!
All the hounds made it across the road!! There was a fence at the 1/2 mile line and am guessing the yote made the fence cause they all came back to the truck!! That yote won that race!!
The hounds never came out on that yote and i found them 3 miles to the east!! I am guessing there was 2 yotes and they took the other one!!
Its noon by then and time for lunch!!

Holy smokes Vargy. I was tired reading the play by play! Can't imagine how tired the stags were. Libby appears to be turning into a mighty fine dog. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I really can't imagine turning out on black top. Don't even like calling with Bubba near a dirt road much less one with lots of cars on it.

Were all the hound hunters with you? Or do they cruise the roads and just happen to come along?

Very interesting read.

Vargy,I'm thinking about getting a stag, but I have lots of 5 strand barb wire around here.Is a stag a bad idea?I can sight chase yotes, and have lots of ground to run,but it all has fences on it.My Catahoullas are just not fast enough to get it done unless the yote is close.Any advise would be great. Duane

mike there was 5 trucks there watching and the van never slowed one bit!! I was in the wrong place or i would of been sitting in the middle of the road with my flashers going!! I have done that many times to slow cars down!!

Duane
you have to get them use to the barb wire!! I know guys in Ok that run alot of barb and their hounds go under a 9 inch wire with out slowing down!! some times they get cut but not alot!! When they do get cut it usally calls for a few staples!!
so yes it can be done!!
I am still working on mine to go over the woven wire here!! I have 2 that will jump now!!

In Oct there will be a big sell and trade day in Lomis Nebreska!! Its a great place to pick up some nice hounds!! I was there last year and there must of been over a 1000 hounds there!!

Thanks for the info, when I get ready I'll buy a a stag from someone I know and trust though.I think they could go under most of the fences here. All of my dogs are loose when the are little and get pretty fence wise.I just wasn't sure if the stags were the same.If I was to make a road trip, are there any started stags for sale in your country?

I read your post often and I dont comment because I dont know much about hound hunting .But I sure enjoy your read and pictures,Thanks for sharing.Rick /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Vargy,

That is one of the best stories of yours I have read /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif. All of them are great but that was intense! Thanks for the good read /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif. I was going to go to bed but im all worked up /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif. One of these days I have got to see that in person.

Duane, make sure you get them used to that barbed wire. Last week had one of our pups out and he hit the fence wide open. Cut himself just below the knee right to the bone. But he stood there like a champ when we stiched him up. Thats with a running walker pup, stags are faster so more damage can be done. Great play by play Vargy. Like those sloppy muddy conditions!!!

reading your posts puts a smile on my face. Thx for the pics and story. You sure make it interesting Vargy. Keep em coming /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Vargy,

I would defend your rights to hunt in any way you see fit and applaud your success, but something about watching a yote get mauled to death just doesn't seem right. Just my gut feeling after seeing the pics. No offense intended.

I think I would really enjoy the chase but would find the final kill difficult. You ever find it hard to kill a coyote that has given you a good run?

Just curious. Maybe I'm the only one. Good luck.

The pics i have posted the coyote is already exspired!! With the right hounds its over very fast!!
The weekend that these coyotes were caught the 2nd catch was apro 300 yrds from the road!! By the time i put the truck in park and walked strait there it was over!! The hounds caught it so i always let them chew on it for the reward!!

I run bay dogs alot, many times I have to "finish" a yote that is holding ground with two dogs at his face. They are killed with one shot to the head, from a foot or two away. How is that any less humane than calling a yote and shooting it at a distance? Our way is, as,or more humane than any other.Whether the dogs make the kill or the .22 pistol.

Duane,

I'm not saying it is humane or inhumane. I just mentioned that after looking at the pictures I imagine it would be difficult for me to watch a coyote get mauled to death. I feel just as bad when I make a bad shot on a yote and it dies slowly.

Vargy mentioned that the dogs finish the yote quckly, in that case I imagine I would really enjoy the sport.

Good Hunting,

BAB

I believe we all try to get a quick kill, and don't feel good when it doesn't work out that way.I see your point of veiw, and thank you for expressing it in a polite manner. We can all have different ideas,as long as we express them like adults, no hard feelings. Duane.

I agree with duane Thank for your post!! There are hounds that do just grab azz!! I have bred my hounds and bought hounds that are agresive just cause i dont shoot and for that reason!!
I do have a few hounds that can handle a yote by them selfs but its over faster with more and less chance at getting hounds hurt!!
99% of the time its over before i can walk to them!!

Vargy

I run hounds and enjoy nothing better than to lets the hounds run, catch and kill their own game.

But in my opinion nothing will end our sport quicker than posting the pics of this on the internet for the whole world to see.

We are doing nothing but giving the anti hunters the ammo they need to bring us down.

The Colorado Fish and Game is just now hearing a case because of the pics and videos of Prairie Dog shooting on the internet.

Certainly not trying to cause an argument or disrespect anyone.
