Suppressor for my AR-15

So I'm wanting to buy a suppressor for my .223 AR-15 as the State of Alabama just made it legal to hunt with suppressors (FINALLY!!!)and wanted to get some real world feedback from anyone who currently hunts with one. I have my eye on either the GemTech G5-T or Trek-T. I prefer a thread-on style to minimize weight. My AR currently has a 20" barrel but thinking of having it reduced to 16" or 18" to further reduce weight.

What are you guys using? Anybody shooting the GemTech G5-T or Trek-T? Where do you hunt with it and what do you like or not like about it? How do the coyotes react to the suppressed shot vs. the unsuppressed shot?

Amy other lightweight brands you use/recommend?

Thanks for your help!

My favorite suppressors are made by Thunderbeast. I have others but these are the ones I use the most. I use a 30p-1 Ti for about everything. The 223P-2 for 5.56 applications. 22L-1 for most rim-fire.

Silencrco makes some great stuff also and I use them the second most.

It really just depends on what you want in a suppressor and is most important to you. I suggest you list out most important to least, the things you want in a suppressor then I can direct you in a direction that will satisfy your needs.

Gemtech, not a fan for several reasons. There are better cans out there. If you want details you will need to pm me for my experience.

I shoot everything suppressed as anything that is not is uncivilized.

Game all act different depending on hunting pressure. Most if in a group cannot tell where the shot is coming from and generally run to where they came from as it feels the safest.

Some just don't know what to do and run 20 yards and stop and look around.

Thanks for the info 3DHusker!

I have looked at the ThunderBeast models too.

I am mainly interested in:

1. Lightweight
2. Sound suppression ability

Those are my two most important aspects of purchasing a suppressor. Cost isn't really a concern.

What ThunderBeast models would best fit the bill? Any other models?

Well then I suggest a Thunderbeast 30 cal Titanium one, That way it will last forever and you can use it on all your centerfire calibers. If you want Aluminum you could go with the Silencerco Harvester. Just depends on how many cans you plan to buy. I suggest a 30 cal if only buying 1 or starting out.

One thing that is very important to me also was shot to shot consistency. The first shot hits in the same place as the last shot. Thunderbeast cans are built to do that. Some others on the market have a cold bore shift on the first shot then all the rest hit the same. That is not ideal when hunting.

Find yourself a dealer and go shoot some suppressors and compare what you find. Life is too short to shoot crap cans.

I also like direct thread cans over QD cans, but I am an accuracy nut..
Updated some info In first post also.

There are several others on here with suppressors and I am sure they will pipe in. Once you get one it is hard to stop.

I have received 4 stamps on items just this month.

For a hunting application, have a look at the Silencerco Harvester. It is 9" long and 11.3oz. Yes it is a 30 cal can but would keep some doors open for later plus it comes with 1/2x28 5/8x24 and 7/16x28 adapter inserts, built in brake and it is only $525.00

any input on the srt hurricanes?
I am also looking into my first personally owned can and would like sound suppression to be first on the list with smallest cold poi shift in second

Yes and I use the 30 cal and both 223 cal on them. On my SBR I use the full auto rated can as the barrel is 11.5. oh and yes I like to hunt yotes with it also.

The reason I say 30 cal is I have several AR calibers larger than 22.

THe 30CB5 will do the job but the shorter you go the less suppression you have. Longer can will suppress the noise much better.

SBR with 223A with 11.5 barrel

The SRT Hurricane is a sweet can also and would recommend one of those also. That can would do you nicely.

Check out Oneill ops for the one that is made for them.

The can comes with 1 adapter of choice and the extras would be extra.
The brake on the end is nice eye candy. The can itself is a brake.

Doug Melton of SRT makes an awesome silencer. For the gas operated AR Doug recommends the Hurricane Ti over the XL version by the way. My SRT Hurricane Ti is on my main predator rig. Thread on for accuracy.

Predators do react differently to the sound of a suppressed round. It depends on terrain, their experience with hunters, and whether you are shooting supersonic or subsonic. I shoot supersonic. They mostly have trouble distinguishing the direction of the shot, which helps conceal the shooter.....their hesitation helps with follow up shots and doubles. Watch O'neill Ops videos to see what I'm talking about.

You will absolutely love shooting suppressed and after you do you will wonder why you waited.

Sendit

I forgot about all the videos they have done.

They have some real fun ones.

Thanks everyone for the great info thus far. Sendit, good info about the Hurricane Ti. I will strongly consider it.

My main reason for wanting one obviously is for hearing protection but the point you made about the coyotes being confused enough after the first shot to give you a second or two edge on the follow up shots is good info to know. I know that suppressors don't make the rifle completely quiet like in the movies, but even a slight edge like that is totally worth the cost in my book. I'm always looking for that little extra advantage to improve my success rate year after year.

Great articles and video Sendit223. Definitely helpful in understanding the differences between shooting suppressed and unsuppressed. I think I am going to go with the SRT Hurricane Ti for my .223 AR. So anyone out there been through the ATF wait process recently? Wanna know how long it is currently taking to get the paperwork back and get the can. Thanks.

I have something coming all the time.

Current times are 7 to 8 months now from pending. The process is speeding up a little from the 9 to 10 months it was with the addition of a few people.

You can check out the times yourself here.

What was your pending date?
E-file or paper form?

If you don't have your pending date call 304-616-4500 with your ser#, dealer name, your name. Then I can predict when you will have it in hand.
