Heck yeah. I graduated from veterinary school in wildlife infectious diseases prior to going into human gene therapy in a later life.

It is bad news and in males causes orchitis, which is something you DO NOT want to get unless you like having red-hot baseball sized nutz that feel like someone swung a baseball bat at them and hit them.

It is difficult to diagnose in humans due to varying symptoms and it being an intracelluar bacterial infection, however serology easily diagnoses it based on neutralizing serum antibodies.

Most common way to contract brucella is drinking unpasturized milk, especially goat milk, but it's primary epidemiological transmission route is direct blood contact.

Brucella is another good reason to wear gloves when butchering swine and not to get cut as it primarily is a blood to blood transmission.

Leptosporisis is also a common bacteria infection in swine as well and it is super bad news also, it localizes in the kidneys and is also highly infectious. The urine from the bladder is also infectious.

Salmonella is also a given in hogs, so be sure to cook the meat well done through and through and avoid contamination of any GI contents with the carcass when removing the offal.

When performing a swine necropsy, I always check the kidneys for inflammation and hardness, they should cut like butter with a sharp knife, if there is any resistance to the blade or it feels like you are cutting a piece of toast, toss the hog.

Also, liver exact same way, it should be easy to slice and not friable or stiff in anyway, also you can check bile duct for liver fluke worms, if you see any, toss the hog to the buzzards.

It is also good to check the mesenteric lymph nodes in the abdomen around the kidneys and gastrointestinal tract, if any are enlarged, swollen or inflamed, toss the hog.

Type in Orchitis in Google and look at the medical photos, I won't post them here due to this being a family site, but it hurts to even look at them...
