T-post pounder !

I know theres lots of farmers and ranchers on the group and a
few others that have to pound posts in from time to time.

Down in my area pounding posts is painful to say the least.
Lots of rocks, hard ground and tree roots.

So I did some shopping and bought me 1 of these.

I was leery after seeing the video but it really does work that
way and that well. I even tried the letting it get started and
in the ground about 6" and stepping back and it really did work.

With small rocks, no problem, it will pound and either move
them of the way or break them up. Same for tree roots.
Larger rocks will make you stop and move the t=post over.

How do you keep the machine from jumping off the post?

In my pre-adult years, we always used a homemade, manual driver.

Once the mid-80s arrived, we started using the loader bucket of the tractor, with it's "power down" hydraulics to push the posts into the ground.

The pounder is in 2 parts. 1 is a sleeve that fits into the
outside part. You slide the post into the sleeve and the sleeve
then get's tightened down on the post by a handle. The sleeve
and post don't move, just the outside pounder part.

I always did posts by hand up in Nebraska in the nice easy to
work with dirt. I'm guessing dirt similar to what you have
in Kansas. You drive posts in by hand down here and you're
feeling it for days after.

Have a Farmer friend with a air driven tractor mounted post driver.
His only complaint was it was slow,(his compressor was to small) but he added with a smile,"it never gets tired"

I sure thought long and hard about a tractor mounted post
driver but a couple of things got in the way.

1. Price. I'm cheap and the post drivers aren't.
2. I have to many places to fence where I can't get a tractor
to. I can get an atv, etc in there with a compressor and
this driver.

Thanks for the explanation.

True there mostly is "soft" dirt around here.
But...we run into plenty of underground rocks, as well. Just depended on the terrain.

Remind me and I'll take a picture or 2 and show you what rocky
ground looks like. It's ugly. We're on top of 1 of the
Ozark mountains and most of our top soil washed away a few
years ago. Now the top soil is only a few inches deep.
You get good rains and trees will just start falling over as
their root system is so shallow.

Up in Nebraska I could slam a post down 18" in 6 or so hits.
Around here you probably haven't even marked the surface with
6 hits. Seriously.

This driver will generally drive a post here in 2-3 minutes.
By hand, it would take me 10-15 minutes and I would be worn
out by the time I was done with 1 post.
