Tactical glass

I put a post on here a while back that said I was going to get into the long range game with a .308 Savage 10FP. Now I've been racking my brain on which scope to get. There are just so many choices. Here are my ideas that have changed since my last post, what do you guys think?

-Leupold Mk4 4.5-14x40 LR/T 30mm
-Burris 3.5-12x50 XTR 30mm
-IOR 10x42 30mm

Now my main concern after reading so much is probably precise clicks and repeatability within the turrets.
Thanks for your replies in advance. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

PS: I do not want to over $800 which is about 300 over my last choices.

Hard to beat the Leupy for repeatability of adjustments.

For a tactical scope, I can't see the need for a 50 mm scope.

Clayman

I just say tactical because they are all labeled "tactical". IDBob, long range for me is gonna start at about 400-500 yards, not 8-1000 yards. I'm not gonna be shooting for groups just at steel plates clay pigeons etc.
Thanks guys.

I like my VX-III 4.5-14X LR/VH reticle. 100 MOA of adjustment gets me as far out as i'll ever go. Fact is, since the reticle nets me 7 MOA to lower post tip anyway, i only rarely spin the turret, and never more than 1 revolution.

yeah unless groundhogs and crows are on the agenda, 16x is plenty, 10x will go 1k on large targets. Heres a couple that I use, t to b, 6.5x20x40 vxIII, 6.5x20x50 LR/T, M1, TMR, XOTIC 4x16x56 USS, vxII 6x18 leupold

Greetings, My personal favorite for the 308/7.62 NATO; Leupold MK 4-M3 Mil Dot. 10x40 part # 47638. Last scope you will ever buy, because your wife will leave you. Great scope.

If you are looking at these scopes you may add the nightforce NSX to the list, the price is comparable to the Mark 4 Leupy and is a really good scope.

Those should work fine for your uses. When you get old your always looking for more power. I use an 8 by 32 for the squirrel fields with the 204 and a 6 by 24 on the 243 Rem VLS.

I've got some inexpensive scopes, but got to say the Leapolds are really great. I've looked thru a couple of the Nightforce scopes at gun shows, never could afford them. They are heavy.

I think I'm going to put a 2.5 to 10 back on the 204, missed a darn nice bobcat because I had the squirrel scope on it last week.

your 308 is a really accurate cartridge for the ranges your talking about and fun to shoot out of a medium or heavy weight gun. I've got a couple of friends whom do the metal target thing and they both shoot the 7mm-08.

You can only shoot as good as you can see!

I would say nothing less than a 6.5-20x50 Leup longrange if you want to be top notch. Don't think you will find anything better. 4.5-14 will work at that distance. Depends on how small of a target you will be shooting at.

+1 on the nightforce.

"When you get old your always looking for more power."

I beg to differ.
The older I get, the less power I want. Over the last 45 years I have only gone down in the power of my scopes. Lower power gives a larger field of view, better light, and less distracting mirage.

If the Hunter Benchrest Class can shoot groups around .200" and under with 6X, there is not much benefit left from going higher.

I would have to agree with that these days myself Jack. I used to be into the higher power scopes also, and have now gone the opposite way as well. My favorite mid-range coyote system is the 3-9X 32mm PFI scope with 22LR Rapid Reticle i now have on my AR. Has a big appeal for me for a walking long-range varminter due to it's low profile, and excellent windage apps. with the reticle. May eventually replace my big Leupold on my 6.5 WSM XP-100 with that particular scope.

Greetings Jack, I am with you on that. My first MK4-M3 was the 6x40 USMC D.M. Scope(back when mil dots were "footballs") I know first hand that it will get the job done to the 600, have it be a head shot on a B27, or a Coyote. I mention the 10x40 due to the 6x now gone from the line up, and before someone spends 1000. on optics, they need to research it as much as the gun selection. S/F

Thanks for all the replies guys. Yes, I do like the looks of that 10x Leupy but $1300 is not in my price range for glass. The Leupold on there now is $790 on swfa.com.

Has anybody had experience with the IOR scopes, I ask just because the only place I've ever seen them is on the Socom MIA in Springfields ads.

Big Jake,
While my personal favorites are the 8.5x25x50 MK4 or the 6.5x20x50 MK4. The Leupold Mark 4 PR 4.5x14x40 with Mil-dot reticle would suit your needs perfectly. A bud of mine has one, very nice scope. He has no problem seeing/hittin clays @ 800yrds. Watch the for sale ads here, Snipershide, etc. There has been some smokin deals on alot of the scopes mentioned!

Good luck!!

For the economically minded the Leupy VXII 6X18X40 with target turrets is pretty hard to beat, but doesn't come with a mil-dot. Maybe a varmint hunter reticle, I don't remember for sure.
