Went out with a buddy today. It’s white here. Had a coyote really bark at us when we called him. We had to change things up a bit to get him and a buddy to come in. They came within 275 yards, hit a fence line then B-lined it north. We were gonna take a shot but they took off. I don’t think they saw us. We had a Foxpro Hellcat with a “blue jay” decoy. It’s too white to distract them I believe. On later sets we used my Primos Crazy Critter which seemed to catch their attention.

Has anyone had good luck using a coyote decoy? I’m thinking this ole dawg might be offended if it sees a foe.

Buddy missed a dog at 60 yards, hit another without calling by buddy’s cattle, called another wise dog near a gut pile but you could tell it was smart. We were getting tuckered out by then too.

Definitely an art to successfully calling the coyotes in. Especially within 300 yards.

Tried out my new Primos Magnaswitch Spartan Triggerstick. Worked well but didn’t snag any myself today…
 
I’m using more coyote vocals than anything these days because around here everyone uses adult cottontail and the coyotes usually run the other way. If I’m not having any luck I switch to pup distress if they are going to come this usually draws them in.

They came to a coyote fight. But buggered off when they got within 275 yards. Need something to get their focus. Too smart.

Packing around a placing a decoy. Another thing I've found that decoys can surprise and spook coyotes if they start spinning in their face. I like to place mine high so they can see them from a distance I convert a trekking/snowshoe pole to a decoy holder and they are very versatile not only...

I've never had good luck with decoys. I like to hide the call so that they have to come looking for the source of the sound. I can't think of a time when I ever had a coyote spook because they didn't see something. It's always because they did see something and didn't like it.
 
Yeah, had them cross an open field and stick their nose in the cone of the caller. They saw something they didn’t like vs not seeing something that should be there. They aren’t gobblers looking for a hen.
 
For pressured coyotes, try a handcall.
Two guys using the exact same handcall will sound different, unlike the same two guys using the same Ecaller.

Stay on stand longer.
Many instruction sheets that come with Ecall and handcalls, suggest calling for 10-15 minutes and if nothing shows up, go somewhere else. If the majority of guys do that, then the late arriving coyotes get to see the hunter get up and leave.

Old coyotes get old through a bit of luck, and learning from their mistakes/close calls.
 
What are the chances that the coyotes that hit that fence line didn't necessarily see you but rather knew that was a boundary line they were scared to cross? I've ran into that before. I've seen coyotes stop and refuse to come closer and then leave because they knew that wasn't somewhere they needed to be.
