TAIL REMOVAL FROM FOXES

Fox Hunter

New member
Hi to you all in the USA. I am here in England and getting tired of throwing the fox (Red) on the fire and burning it all. Does anyone out there have a failsafe method of getting the tails of these dogs? I have heard mentioned on this site a tool called a "tail stripper" has anyone got one I can have or where I can buy one? Cabelas and Bass Pro are a "Don't stock". If one of you kind fellow hunters could make a sketch I could always make myself one. Please help, the game keeper and I nearly pulled our arms outa the sockets the last time.

Thanks, safe and happy hunting

Dr Fox

Welcome to Predator Masters Fox Hunter.

You should be able to buy a tail stripper from any outfit that sells trapping goods. Bass pro, and Cabela's, no they wouldn't carry anything like this.

Check out Northwest Trappers Supply. Their in Owatonna, Minnesota.

Hi guys

What can I say, a great big thank you from (As you guy's would say) little ol' me. Your the greatest. Wife not too happy now, thinks I will be making a huge throw over for the bed out of Fox tails Lol "The wildlife of today is not ours to dispose of as we please. We have it in trust. We must account for it to those who come after" - King George VI

Hey Fox Hunter,I use a wire stripper for "pulling"the tail bones from all my critters.it works on everything from mink to coyotes and most people already have one in their tool box.Good luck

Hi Flattail

When you say wire strippers, you mean those little things that take of the insulation from the copper wires?

I think that just might do it I will go away and experiment. Thanks for your support, safe and happy hunting.

Fox Hunter, I use 2 pieces of broom handle about 6 inches long just start by skinning a little ways then put tail between pieces of handle and pull down I have done hundreds of coyotes, and coon this way.

Hi Coycaller

I heard this method from loads of people here in the UK. But guess what, no one can show me how, I tried it with a friend and damn near pulled my arms off and I gave up in the end and never did get the tail off so I am now thinking its a joke.

Would you be able some way to show me how with pictures or something?

Safe and Happy hunting

Take two 6 inch pieces of aluminum arrow shaft or 16 penney nails and put them on each side of the tail and strip it off. Never had any problems. I have a stripper like in the pic, and the arrow shaft or nails work just as good.

Thanks Yellowhammer

I will try it but if you guys are winding me up I will never forgive you!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Fox Hunter, Don't squeeze to hard on sticks just enough pressure to hold against tail bone then pull. Make sure you have skin loose on the back of animal so you are just pulling on the tail. Sometimes the tail will pull off then I take a piece of small rope double it and loop around tail so it will pull tight then go ahead and strip off tail.

Wow!...I've never heard of so many techniques to stripping a tail.
I think the biggest problem here is too much pressure being applied to the actual tail bone. All that really needs to be done is to make sure that whatever gadget your using is applying pressure against the tail skin and not the bone. Whatever your tool may be it should ride down the tail without pinching the tail bone.

Plus...
I have never seen anyone strip a tail by slowly and consistantly pulling down the tail with their tool. The trick is to get your tool in place, snuggly but not tightly around the tail bone, yet firmly against the tail skin you are about to pull off. And in one single swift motion pull away from the animals body, holding firmly the tool of your choice, bringing the tail skin with you.

 think of taking a condom off boys  ...same procedure.

I usally just lay the fox belly down on the floor with its head facing behind me and stand on the ankles then skinning up the tail a little and making room for the two broom method and in a nice swift motion as river runner said pull up and before you know it you have one hollow tail....all thats left to do is put a nice straight split down the length of the tail

Hey River Runner

Here we have another difference between you guys and us brits. I always thought that little teat on the end of a condom was for putting under your foot to get it off!!!!! Hi Eddiev

Glad to hear how you do it "down under" (no wise cracks please from you guys) Thanks for the advice, if this method has found its way to Aussie then it must be true and I'm doing something wrong. I am off hunting at the weekend so IF I get lucky on the old red fox I will give it a try. I have ordered one of those tail strippers tho just in case. On another note Eddiev do you use one of those calls by Georgescu (have I spelt that right) have you any luck?

Happy and safe hunting

The main call i use is a button whitle....im sure you have seen andre use one in his videos. These work really well for the foxes here in Oz. they are just a peice of pressed tin and imitate a cotton tail in distress. I do know the other call you speak of thou and you can make them out of a peice of tin bent over with a hole in it.

I also have some called sent to me from the US that work ok but i have always had more luck with the button whitles and at $2 australian how can you go wrong????
