taking in the field photos

Guys ,I'm just a guilty as everyone else here of taking bad pics at one time or another! But I would like to see all that change.I make a conscious effort to do the best of my ability to take clean pleasant pictures! I realize that we may not always have a camera with us in the field ,but once we get to one we can make an effort to find a bush or something nice for a background ,instead of the back of the truck or hanging in the barn or garage. If you like those kind of pictures that is fine, your choice ,but I love to see tastefully done picture in the field of any critter!
I've taken several pictures of the same hogs to show what I mean. you tell me what looks better!

I think if you could take some without that ugly dude in it that would improve things a lot! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

uh ,Randy I have lots of pics without you in them! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

OK, I'll admit it! I'm jealous! Well, not about how the guy in the pic looks! Just that you get to take so MANY pics! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

All kidding aside, since I started hunting with Glenn and seeing how he does his pictures, it's made an impression! Before, my pics wouldn't have been suitable for all viewers, but now I actually have a picture on my computer AT WORK of me, Glenn and two VERY dead coyotes. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif Nobody minds the picture at all because of the steps Glenn took when getting ready. It only takes a few extra seconds-if that. I think the thing to keep in mind is to picture (no pun intended) what reaction a non-hunter might have to a shot that shows lots of blood, etc. We're used to it so it's easy to get jaded!

Next thing is to find a lucky camera like Glenn's! Y'know, the kind that makes a picture of a regular guy show up with a truckload of animals every time you push the button!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Field pics always look better,i hate seeing pics of animals in the back of a truck, not very respectful of our quarry.I always try to reduce the amount of blood and gore seen, push in tongues ect ect.The field pic with the 2 pigs looks great.

When I first started to read this thread, I thought /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif......then as I read alittle farther, I busted up laughing /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif. Man, I don't care who you are or how serious you want to be, you ain't gonna get cut much slack /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif. One of the reasons I like it here /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif. So, Guess wants to "know what looks better"? I vote for the pig /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif. Sorry Guess, I just couldn't help it /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif. Like I said, this forum is great. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Oh yeah, the top photo is by far better, good point /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif.

Glenn, you are right on. Obviously the top photo is superior. I've always tried to take decent pictures, but after hunting in Africa I really go to great lengths. Those folks taught me a lot about setting up and taking good field pictures. My PH in Namibia would literally spend up to an hour per animal to get it cleaned up, the background and foreground perfect, the pose(s) just right, and the hunter looking his best. He gladly shot each animal from a variety of angles, and with up to three cameras to make sure a good photo was captured somewhere in there. It really opened my eyes to good picture taking, and has encouraged me to carry that practice over into all hunting and related photos.

Glenn- you hit the nail on the head.

I always try to get a good background and pose the animal. Unfortunatley, I often hunt alone, and don't have anyone to take the picture until after I get home. I then have to hunt for a suitable background.

We've all seen the "pickn up bed" shot, or the coyote laying on the ground however he landed when he was thrown on the pile.

I like the posed, background shots, of course.

If I didn't think it would hurt anyones feelings, I would post some examples of "what to do" and "what NOT to do" from our very own Photo forum.

Take a Tripod and most digitals have timers built in, hit the button and your good to go, these were taken while hunting alone.

I have to admit, most times I could have taken more time getting a better look, but they all were done with a timer and tripod.

Elkeholic is right, the majority of my predator hunting pictures are shot using the timer on my camera because I'm often alone. A number of my pictures in Africa were shot the same way. At times the PH and I would hunt alone (no trackers or entourage), so if I wanted him in the pic I had to use the timer. I got a little 10" (or so) tripod that I use. It puts the camera at the perfect level (even with the animal's eyes) for hero shots.
