I was just wondering if any of you have ever tanned using Alum. I killed a fox and was wanting to tan the skin, I have read up on it a little bit but just wondering if any of you that have experience would be willing to give me some pointers I want to use Alum because I already have some, but open to other suggestions, Thanks

I reccomend Curatan its has worked great for me on everything from elk to fox. You can get it a VanDykes taxidermy online. It not to expensive either. Good Luck

I have used the water/alum/salt mix to tan a red fox tail and it did just fine.... I could have taken more time with the working of the skin, but I was pleased with the outcome.

You know the exact mixture?

I used this mixture(down sized) and it was fine... Ive seen heavier alum to water mixes, but this one was what I use.

Prepare a tanning solution of 4 gallons of water, 1 pound of granulated alum, and 1 pound of salt. Soak the hide for a week, stirring once a day.

Thanks psychowolverine thats about the same mix I had read in a tanning book. I have two foxes that i would like to try, saltin them right now. Im just planning on hanging the hides up on the wall when im done. I might try that curatan that TacticalDriver was talking about next time, since I already have the Alum on hand.

do one fox one way and the other another.. then you will have a better idea the next time you tan anything...

You going to oil and work them to soften them at all?

What is the complete process? What do you do when you take them out of the concoction?

dry it off, apply neats foot oil, or another leather oil and work over a board edge to soften the skin...
