In the 1970's I had a small ranch, and I had a few sheep that the dogs were getting into. I needed a flat shooting rifle, and all I had was a 1886 .33 Winchester of my Grandads, and so I visited the local gun shop. There I made the absolute worst trades I have ever made.
I walked out of there with a .243 Model 700 and a Tasco Pronghorn scope. It has served me fairly well throughout my hunting with it. Lots of coyotes and deer.
Recently I have decieded to replace the Tasco with a Burris Fulfield II I bought a few years ago.
Is that old Tasco going to be worth putting on another gun?
I noticed that you can buy them now for about 69.00 and I never knew they were so cheap.
I am not too knowledgable about scopes, but I have used that old Tasco for many years and seems ok.
I have a Leupold on a Ruger, and I like that.

What would you guys do? Junk the scope for a better one?

Thanks

I have a Tasco 3x9, made in Japan, I bought back around 1988 at a Sears Clearance store for less than $30. When I need a scope for a new rifle I usually use it till I've found a higher power scope for the rifle. My Tasco has some pretty good glass in it. Only problem with mine was the screw in the power adjustment ring fell out and was lost. Chuckle, discovered a retaining screw from a ceiling fan light globe had the right threads and used it to replace the lost screw.

If its a clear/bright scope and holds zero...I'd say keep it handy as a backup scope.

what seems to be typical of the less expensive scopes is that they look good and perform well enough under normal circumstances ie; enough light don't take them on a rough trip etc.. where the money comes into play is under low light conditions and workmanship. a click should get you a 1/4 inch in a decent scope the cheaper ones will sometimes be inconsistant. 1 click may get you a 1/4 and the next click nothing the click after that may get you an inch. in some cases they will hold zero for a year or two then bang what happened? again that last 15 minutes of light can tell you a lot

My buddy loaned me a Tasco Pronghorn 3-9 to try on my Mini. I chased the crosshairs around for about 30 rounds and gave it back.
If yours doesn't do that, I guess it's okay.

I'd just never buy one, after that wonderful experience.

AFAIK tasco hasn't ever made a scope, they import and brand them so you never really know what you're going to get. I've got 2 6-24x50's downstairs. 1 is a TASCO, one is unbranded. They're identical and worth about the $50/ea I bought them for. I've heard of folks that have great Tasco, I've heard that have garbage.

My old hunting partner had one on his 30-06 the first year I took him elk hunting. Towards the end of the day on a good stand area he started driving me nuts with all the "Are you ready to go?" questions. So I hiked over to him and told him to be patient and knock it off. He told me there's not enough light left to shoot so we should head back to camp. I figure he's just scared of being in the woods (new york corn field hunter), but I took his rifle and looked through it. Real close to looking at a big circle of mud. During normal light it worked fine. I hand him mine that's sporting a billion year old leupy and you can count blades of grass at 200 yards. Then he got to spend an hour doing nothing while I got to hunt. Next season he had a leupy on the gun.

I personally had a "world class" when I bought my 1st rifle. Salesman said they were good glass yadda yadda yadda. It lasted 2 seasons on my 30-06 before it developed a walking zero and it got moved to progressively lighter rounds until it finally failed on my 10/22. And 10 minutes later for some bizarre reason it developed a bunch of .22 size holes in it.

I bought one of the new/made by leupy redfields to try out this year. Very impressed for $200. Yesterday I got a 2nd one in. Great deal for the $$$. Great glass, lifetime warranty. They're the least expensive glass I plan on ever buying and for 90% of my hunting there's 0 reason to spend more
