Hi Randy, good to see you again. We corresponded a few years back about fox hunting at night. Your expanded website is really good! One of a kind.....

UTFoxHunter,

By far the best location for Red Fox is farmland mixed with cattail swamps, grasslands, thick woodlots or christmas tree plantations. They love to roam open fields, but will never live far from cover and most important.... habitat for RODENT POPULATIONS.

A red fox is MUCH more active and willing to respond at night. Daytime calling is much less productive.

My favorite hand call is a standard model critter call using the higher pitch range of sounds. My favorite electronic sound is a baby cotton tail played very softly and sparingly after one medium loud sequence to attract attention from a distance.

The biggest difference between a red and a coyote is the level of timidity. A red fox is a fear filled creature and for good reason. The way coyotes have expanded, if a fox isn't constantly on the defensive, he can easily become the main course heading toward a rabbit dinner! Therefore, for fear of his life a red will ALWAYS circle and approach from down wind. Obviously, coyotes do this too, but if a yote is fully convinced of your offering he will come charging in from any angle. Not so with a red. The entire set up location must be based on the direction of the wind.

From there it's a matter of scouting and putting in your time.....
