Tell Me About This Scope

A good friend just gave me a NIB Redfield scope that must be 35 years old. It's a 1.75- 5X Wideview with the 4 plex reticle.

I thought about putting together a "classic" rifle like a Rem BDL walnut stock with the Redfield bottom screw rings. The only wood stocked rifles I have are laminated and the rest are fiberglass.

I'm wondering how the old Redfields stacked up against the Leupys and Weavers of the same era.

That would look good on my 1968 vintage Remmy Model 788 .222. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif I put a real nice Bushnell ScopeChief 3-9 on it.

That would make a great scope for a vintage deer rifle.

The older redfild scopes were good scopes. I have had a few of the older ones and liked them. The new redfield scopes are junk. Just got rid of a newer one and will never buy another one. bad picture would not gather light at all just a junk scope all the way around.

The older Redfields(while still made in Denver) are very good scopes. Just like all others they had different classes of scopes but all seemed pretty good to me. I still have a 3-12 ultimate Ilumminator sitting on a 22-250 that is on par with any of my leupys. My 4x golden 5 star is sittin on a .45/70 and is the cats meow for small compact scope.
If you dont want that 1.75- 5X, ill take it off your hands. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I have a Redfield 1-4x sitting on top of my Rem 660 350 Mag, I also have 3x9 and a 1.75x5 widefield that I don't have mounted and I will never part with them, they were my fathers. Back in their day they were pretty much the standard by all scopes were judged.

I have a 3-9 redfield on my 25-06 that my dad bought me back in high school. I've never once had to reset that thing its a real fine scope.

The old Redfield scopes were very good - even my today's standards.

They were having cost problems, and the EPA was beating the crap out of them for ground pollution of the plant site.

They shut down for a while to regroup, and re-opened for about two or three years - the scopes made after the re-opening were pure trash.
