Tell me what you know about the 7x57

History you can find on wikapedia and many other sources. It is one of the all time great game cartridges, having taken most of the game animals around the world and in the hands of some, critters far larger than would be expected. It earned it's bones with the 175gr RN bullet both soft point and solids. Hornady dropped one of the best forest whitetail bullets the 154gr RN's. My ex-BiL shot a petite little custom 93 Mauser and thought it was the ultimate whitetail rifle. I shoot the Rimmed version in a pretty little drilling.

With a pair of Brenneke's in the shotgun barrels and a 175 Rn in the rifle I don't think there is anything on this continent it wouldn't take. A coupe #5's in the shotgun barrels and a 139 or 175 in the rifle it will keep you in everything you'll find on the praries and forests of the lower 48.

The 7x57 and 7mm-08 are pretty much kissing cousins though the 7mm-08 can be chamberred in a short action and the 7x57 in the next size up.

also known as the 275 rigby, because nobody wanted a German gun in great Britain, if that helps your research a bit

I've read a few articles on it but figured some of you had some first hand experiences with it. I bought a custom Mauser from my gunsmith today. Its been sporterized quite a bit. Really nice little rifle. It looks like it will make a nice rifle for Whitetail hunting. Got dies and brass in the deal too. Even better.

The 7x57 is like a boat that's 40 feet on the outside and 80 feet on the inside. Way more performance than one would expect from the round.

Like was mentioned, it made its reputation with 175 grain bullets but it works well with bullet across the whole spectrum. When I had mine I used the 154 grain Hornady spire points with great success on mule deer.

A fellow by the name of W.D.M Bell took around 800 elephants and scores of other animals with one of those things. I wish I had me a 7X57 in an old tang safely Ruger M77. Just in case I find a pachyderm in my wife's flowerbed some day!

Well, no elephants and no garden, but plan on whacking a few deer next season. If it shoots half as good as it looks, it should be a fine rifle.

I had a beautiful little Mauser sporter that I traded a hog for. No joke, I traded a big old boar hog for that 7x57 scoped rifle. The rifle was nicely proportioned and balanced, had pretty wood, a 22" medium weight tapered barrel and a German 4X scope. Wish I could remember who the scope manufacturer was. It shot the Remington Core Lokt 175 gr. round nose into about 1.25" groups and drilled deer as dead as my '06 did while recoiling less. I sold the rifle to help raise money for a set of wedding rings for the hot little blonde college cheerleader I had been trifling with on and off for a few years. Lost my rifle but gained a properly proportioned little thing that has kicked me harder than ithe 7x57 ever did for the last 38 years.

Well played, sir.

I can relate.

I like mine a lot. I have a Rem m700 mountain rifle in 7x57. I shoot Nosler 140g B-Tips, with IMR4350 just under 2800fps rolls deer and 1 coyote nicely.

I have an old FN with a short throat, carbine. It is a super accurate rifle with any bullet I shoot.

In a modern rifle, this would be one heck of a case, and I would load R17 or R23. If you are going to build a rifle on this case, a long action is best, and get a print of the gunsmith's reamer or ask how much freebore the reamer will have.

I have a Steyr Mannlicher in 7X57 that I have shot several whitetail bucks, several coyotes and 2 black bears with. I use IMR-4350 with Hornady 139gr interlock bullets mostly. The bears were shot with a Nosler Partition bullet of 150 or 160 gr. not sure which but believe it was 160.

I picked up a BRNO wearing a 8x56 Schmidt und Bender in Germany. Love the gun love the round. Shot my first red stag and roebuck with it. I havnt had a chance to reload for it but have a factory box of Hornady for it. Your going to love that Mouser.

I took this rifle in on a trade from my gunsmith/friend. It sets in a walnut Boyd's stock with end caps and grip cap but not real sure what they are made of, but it's really nice. It also has a Bold trigger and safety. The bolt has been modified and is very nicely done also. I took it out of the stock to install sling swivels and the stock is completely bedded from the rear tang to the tip of the fore-end...very nice job also. On top, looks like Leupold mounts and rings and an older 3x9 Redfield scope. The barrel and action are nicely blued and the trigger guard had a lever installed to release the door to empty the mag. Pretty neat little rifle all in all. I also got dies and brass and four box's of bullets. Now to just get to the range to see how it shoots!!

My first deer rifle was a tang safety Ruger 77 in 7x57.IMO overall the finest cartridge of all time.As Charlton Heston said-"From my cold dead hands".

I talked to my smith again this morning. He said the barrel on my rifle was a new barrel but is basically a military barrel sold to replace the worn out barrels on old service rifles. There was never sights installed on the new barrel so no mounts or holes in it. I'm just curious what bullets will probably shoot best and what I should consider acceptable accuracy?? I'm not expecting bugholes.

Made it to the range. One type of bullet/powder combo did shoot a bughole. Totally impressed.

The 7mm-08 and 7x57 are ballistically very similar and shoot the same bullets. Any decent 140 grain spire point bullet will be fine for deer. Of course you can go lighter or heavier but 140s have a decent ballistic coefficient and velocity.
