Im ajunior in Hs now, and i have decided to go to school for Biology, and ive decided i want to go to texas.. i told mom i swear its not for the predators and whitetails /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif but nevertheless, is there any schools in texas where i could go for biology with good calling near it?

One of the world's best

Texas A&M University

There are many others. Almost all Texas colleges and universitys are not that far from good calling. Might also look at Tarlton State in Stephenville

Biology is a little broad but I'm partial to Texas Tech at Lubbock, being close to my home in NM, good school, good hunting/fishing too.

San Antonio or Austin would be my second choice because of the Axis deer (no season, no limit) and El Paso for the good Javalina hunting.

All have good coyote and the rest of the state is reputed to have good hunting too but I can't help there from personal experience.

Weather might be a consideration for you. East of I-35 is generally hot and wet and west is hot and dry.

A great state IMHO as a non Texan. Enjoy!

Don't discredit Oklahoma State University. Some good calling around here, and also an excellent Biology program, along with a great Wildlife program.

Are you wanting to go to college for a Biology degree or a wildlife management degree?

There is a big difference. I have known some really sharp guys who had masters degrees in biology who could not make an interview for a wildlife biologist job because they did not have the required classes and/or experience.

For Wildlife Management degrees in Texas, there are two that stand out: Stephen F. Austin State University College of Forestry (my alma mater) and Texas A&M.

Texas Tech and Sol Ross Univ. also have good programs in the western part of the state.

I don't know any wildlife biologist that went to Tarlton, but there are probably some somewhere.

Justin,

I went to Tarleton for three yrs. My GF just graduated with a biology degree and a buddy of mine got his masters in biology from Tarleton. That being said I dont really know a lot about their program (Im a Finance major). What I do know is that Tarleton has the only collegiate high power rifle team in the United States if you like to shoot. http://www.collegehighpower.org/
I am currently finishing my degree at Texas Tech and have heard good things about the science departments here, probably because of the med school.

im looking into wildlife biology to be a little more speciific. Thanks for all your responses guys, but i've got to head to work. Maybe tomorrow i'll get out for a little yote hunting

You bet we've got a Wildlife Biology Department here at Tarleton State!! Many of my buddies are into that stuff.....some folks who want to be game warden take courses in it as well.

Oh yeah, did I mention we're in Predator Hunting heaven??? Well, maybe not....but there are quite a few of 'em about. I'm a Sophomore at Tarleton right now, and I love it!! Don't be afraid.....college CAN be fun!!

I went to to Colorado State University in Ft. Collins Colorado. They used to have a great wildlife biology department and from what I hear it's still doing well.

Best of all worlds. Right on the Colorado/Wyoming border you have the National Grasslands for prairie hunting, National Forests in the mountains and for private land hunting you have a LOT of cattle ranchers that need to get rid of coyotes.

My problem with Texas is that almost all the land is private and there are so many people managing for trophy whitetail and exotics that they're not too excited about letting strangers with guns on their property.

I'm more of a public land hunter because of the widely varied places I can hunt without having to ask permission.

Just something to consider.
