I took a week and hunted in Texas 2 weeks ago. My rancher friend told me he had some bird hunters try their hand at hog hunting but a pack of 4 coyotes ran the hogs off of the feeder every time they came in. He pointed me in the direction and the first morning I set up in the sendero.
Using the dying jack rabbit call, I had three coyotes come in. I took the closest one, a male and the others scattered. A few seconds later, another pops it's head out, took a look and disappeared. One down.
The next day it was much colder and I set up just a few hundred yards from the other day. I watch 3 coyotes coming down the sedero, going side to side hunting. They weren't coming to my caller as the batteries died from the cold. I take the shot on the middle one, standing sideways, hear the "thump" of the bullet and see four legs in the air. The others scurry for the brush. This was another male, a little larger than the first. Besides my caller batteries being dead, so was my phone.
The third day, I set up back at the first spot. One comes in and I drill it. Walking out, I cannot find it. After walking, I found out my scope was on 10 power and this coyote was another 75yds farther away. I made a gut shot on it and it crawled in to the mesquite to die.
The fourth day, I am in another sendero, on another ranch and have a large boar flush two coyotes in to the open. I barked one to a stop, fired and saw my bullet hit the dirt just underneath the coyote. Miss!
All in all, lots of opportunities, several dead and looking forward to another trip down.
A beautiful coat on these coyotes this time. No mange and full. I will think about having one mounted or made in to a rug.
