The .220 Swift for Fox?

I'll be going down to South Texas, to deer hunt, the week after Christmas. While I am down there I plan on trying to call some fox. I was wondering if anyone has taken any fox with a .220 Swift. I have taken bobcats and coyotes with mine, shooting 40-grain Ballistic Tips, but I know fox are a little more fragile. Would I be better off shooting a .22 mag or will the Swift be ok on the pelts?

Justin

jBrad,
Leave the Swift home while after foxes, even with the 40 grainers. Most of your fox will be blown into, as Gerry Blair used to say, "the next zip code". The 22 Mag will be a very good choice for most shooting. the 17 Rem as well as the 22 Hornet will do a nice job as well. I don't think you can beat a good 12 ga. with copper plated BB's or #4 Buck. I have had clients shoot fox with 22-250's and there would be about half of the fox dripping from the underbrush. Fox, both red and grey, are light framed and tend to blow up quite easily. Years ago, back in Indiana, I used to shoot all my fox with a 243 Win. and 90gr. FMJ bullets. No pelt damage and always killed them quite dead, but a very poor load for coyotes, and a dangerous bullet for populated areas. I went to the 22 Hornet with 40gr bullets and have not looked back.
For what it's worth,
Steve

Hello,
Ditto on the Swift. I saw what the meager 223 can do to a fox in Arizona, and beleive me, the result is not pretty.

Stick with the Mag.

I just took a faox with my swift the other day and I use 50gr ballistic tips and I will never do it again! The hide was totaly ruined I wish I would have used a 22mag.

Thanks
Shawn

Thanks for the imput guys. I was thinking the .220 would be a little hard on em. I'll take the .22mag. I had the old .22 mag out this morning shooting squirrels, knocking the dust off of it. It should do a fine job on fox.I'll let ya'll know how it goes.

Later,
Justin
