The $30 ghillie suit revisited...

Hey guys I was very interested in this thread and very impressed . Some of you were building varying types of suits with different material. Layoutman I wouldn't mind seeing how your raffia suit turned out and acefazer I wouldn't mind seeing your jute ghillie looks.

I was also wondering if anyone could give me a comparison of jute vs. avery killer weed vs. raffia grass. I live in wet western Washington and would like to know how they perform in these conditions as some of my hunting would be here. Does the jute hold water and end up getting smelly if not dried properly? What happens when the killer weed or raffia gets wet or do they just shed the water? I know the jute would last a long time, but how about the other two; has anyone used the avery killerweed for duck blind material and how has it lasted? Any information would be appreciated.

Good to see another Grahamlite on here. I think there are a couple other PM members that live out here also. What part of Graham are you in? We are right next to the Kapowsin Airfield.

The suit is getting there... I will post picks when it is done. Once I saw the $30 Ghillie design I decided to look into the Raffia grass. Picked some up and was impressed. I will use some of that in my suit also. The more texture the better (I think). The raffia grass appears to be not as strong as the Jute. I dont think that will matter because you are always changing the suit to make it better. I really like the color of the grass after dipping in the Rit Dye. If you only hold the Raffia grass in the dye mix for a few seconds the grass only absorbs some of the dye. It looks great cause the grass holds some of it's origional color. I will post some pics later.

I am putting some of the grass on undyed. I figure with the foxes and yotes being color blind, it can't look much different from broomsedge.

I plan on doing a weak dye mixture with the rest. I have black and green. I figure that a weak black will look like hay with some mold/mildew or rot on it.

If I am wrong, like someone said, it's easy to change and the price is right.

Will Raffia make it through a wash cycle? No drier of course.

Hey, I'm in Olalla near Gig Harbor. Are you getting the strands from that Military supply place on So. Tacoma Way near the Fort or is this self picked. Also I am available for a hunt just about any time. If you want to get together. let me know.

Sorry...didn't catch that you had replied to my post.

I already had the hat (ordinary camo ballcap type)

Already had old camo jacket and old faded camo bib overalls.

So just the cost for rafiA(PROBABLY $15) tWO PACKS OF RIT DIE ($5-$6)

I used embroidery thread ( about $10worth bought, but didn't use all of it.)

I used this page for help

http://www.stevequayle.com/News.alert/06_Prep_tips/050603.ghillie.suit.html

Time? probably 3 1/2 -4 1/2 hours? Did it while watching tv and a little at a time, so hard to judge.

again, sorry I didn't answer sooner.
