The boar evened up the score....

I love to hog hunt and i always carry a side arm aswell as a rifle. But even now the idea of that happening to me still scares me.

Our WMA are for the most part rimfire only. They do give us a few days during deer season to use centerfire and a "special" 2 week centerfire season in march and sept for hog ONLY.
My .357 with a heavy custom handload is what rides my hip whenever im in hog country.

I carry a 1911 loaded with critical defense ammo, I am hoping that it will be able to do the job if I ever encounter something like this... Kizmo: You are welcome! I am glad I could help! You did the hard part and shot straight under pressure... If you dont mind me asking what part of Georgia are you from? We hunted in Macon last time I was down your way

I am sure we all have done the matador moves a time or two. My son will start hunting with me in a few years, and I am going to carry a 24" metal bat with me. There have been times when they break the bay so quickly and you can't shoot around the dogs that a bat would be the right tool. It will be only for protecting my son from chargers, as I will not be carrying a gun with him hunting.

I don't know. Central Georgia is always where I've heard of people hog hunting for a long time. Saw my first wild hog on Horse Creek WMA back in the late '70's. I only started hog hunting out of necessity last February when the hogs moved onto my place and the landowner wanted them shot. Didn't have any hogs there before that. Most of the places I hunt down here still don't have hogs (yet).

Went out to the place I killed 40 since Christmas this morning. Only saw dead ones. So far, so good.

A friend went in the brush looking to finish off a wounded boar. He found the boar in a creek bed and when he prepared to finish it off, a sow he did not see charged him. He needed 150 stitches to repair his forearm. This is why we carry a roll of duct tape with us. You can wrap a large wound really fast with duct tape.

Sounds like you're doing a good Job!!! From my under standing wild hogs are a major pain in the arse... and most people that have them on their farms want them gone... "Unless they hunt them for sport and its not a working farm."

Thanks for all of the info! I think the Ocmulgee WMA Is where we are going to end up chasing pigs...as long as they are in season...I still need to contact GDNR and get the skinny on all of the regs.

My buddy now takes a dog with him when going after a wounded hog. He sends this little dog, full of fight though, in to the brush and listens carefully. If the dog is growling, that means he's found the hog and it's dead, he's most likely chewing on it. If he hears the dog barking, that means he's found the hog and it's alive. If the dog comes running back out, likkity-split, that means the hog is right behind him and you'd better be climbing a tree.
