The golf bug...

may have bitten again!

For years I was obsessed with golf only to have it end sooner than I would have hoped with a herniated disk in my back. That was about four years ago. Ever since I have struggled with nerve damage and even had more disk material fragment since then, but may have finally turned the corner. I got back on the course a few times in the last month or so and so far my back is holding out. It won't be long before I am back to form.

Anyway, that is all I need, another hobbie popping back up, not as if I didn't have too much crap in my life.

The golf bug is a tough one. I too once played almost daily, but with a young family and a mortgage, work and such I haven't played very much at all. I did get out a while back, and could easily find myself playing all the time again. It's one of the few sports that can compete with the cost of hunting. My son is 7 and begins lessons this friday, so that will get me out more with him. Can't beat one on one time with your son on a golf course. I've tried taking him calling coyotes, but he only makes it about 45 seconds into each stand before he's moving all over the place and wispering loudly "dad...there not coming".

I feel ya man, I have lately been doing my ex favorite past time, which is the never ending search for the next fairway wood to go in my bag. As you know golf became a job for me at one time and ceased to be fun when that happened. But some old friends have come back into my life and they are VERY surprisingly addicted to golf and want me to play with them and teach them. These guys are not the golfing type more of the football and powerlifting type so it was a shock when they contacted me. I never lost the teaching bug so I was excited to have students again, I LOVE teaching!

You know the old saying, "Those who can't do, Teach"

I tried it once. Got kicked off the course for T-ing off with a Remington 1100 and a load of #8 bird shot. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Funny you should mention that, the powerlifting thing is where much of my back issues started. The two didn't mesh very well for me.

As Chupathingy could tell you, take it slow and easy. My wife suffered a back injury in the fall of 2005. As golf is the one sport she could participate in she never left it alone. She still gets out on the course twice a week. She has learned(the hard way)when to stop. She may leave without playing a full eighteen or even nine but she at least gets to play. Her Dr. has even said that it has been good for her to get out and play. Stretch before and after and have fun.

I have played for years, but lately it seems to not be on the list of things to do. I havnt touched my sticks in 2 years, which is a shame because its a very nice set of clubs /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I dont have any disk problems but have had problems with general lower back pain. My chiropractor loves it when I play on a regular basis, she doesnt have to work so hard /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif It keeps me loose and feeling good. I should get out at least to the range.

Yeah, I used to play a few times a week when I was younger and really enjoyed it but I just have too many 'expensive' hobbies that golf would probably put my wife over the edge... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

When I hit the course I know how crack addicts feel. Golf and bass fishing are the only things that keep me sane in summer. Both my boys(5 and 8) love it and hit balls on our property 4-6 hours a day. The 8 year old is a natural, been to several camps, and tied my score after 9 holes the first time he played on a course (short tees) He'll make a living at it one day. My goal will be to retire early and be his caddie. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Years ago a coworker suggested I take up golf as another way to interact with clients. Since I didn't know anything about golf, I asked if he knew where I could get lessons. "Oh yeah, I know this golf pro that is absolutely crazy about golf". "He's a bit over the top because he's so obsessed with golf, but he's good". I thought this might be the guy to teach me. I signed up for introductory lessons. After all the preliminary instruction on stance, swing, hold, etc. etc. we moved out to the course. My first ball off the tee was so badly sliced that it shot off at near right angles. The ball hit a groundskeeper right square in the eye. The groundskeeper hit the ground screaming and writhing in pain. The pro and I ran over to him only to find my ball buried in the man's eye-socket. I was screaming at the pro WHAT DO I DO? WHAT DO I DO? After carefully evaluating the situation, he looked up, smiled and said "get your wedge"! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif Now that is a golf FANATIC! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

If you read the rulebook Weas it specifically states you must take a drop instead of hitting the ball out of the greenskeeper's eye socket. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Too funny /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif I tried golf once, the only b*ll I hit is when I stepped on a rake.

That is funny, I don't intend on playing with you anytime soon!

my brother has played for years and i go out every now and then but I get tired of him telling me to pick it up wrong fairway etc. etc. but I do like the turn at nine beer kart i don't play any better but I like the kart ride. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Grip it and rip it baby! Love to hear that "ting" echo. I'm a fair hand, but I don't play much. My son on the other hand is off the hook crazy good. He received a golf scholorship and played in college. He told me yesterday he has played the last 14 days straight! Ya gotta love it something fierce to put yourself through that kinda frustration for 14 days in a row!
