The truth about coal!!

I am writing this after seeing an artical in The newyork times titled " coal country is a state of mind". Yes i know that is the ny times but this really got me. To begin with i live in Ky on the Wv line. I have seen first hand what the last president done to the coal industry. This artical says that coal has not been that big of a job producer after ww2 and then got worse after 1980. Mostly because with the newer technology they can just " blow the top of mountains off" instead of the hand pick and shovel of the old days. None of this is true. To begin with they dont blow the top of "mountains" off as they said. We dont even have mountains in this are we have hills. And what is almost always done is strip mining or deep mining. Which has absolutely nothing to do with the top of the HILL. Also the idea that all the jobs in the coal industry have to do with mining is also bull. What about all the coal dock workers or truck drivers, trains hauling loads, electricians, mechanics, inspectors ect ect. I have never worked in the coal industry but a lot of my family, friends, and neighbors have. And none are now that i know of anyways. So once again we see more fake news to try to make Trump look bad. My computer always shows the news app when turned on and it is ALL anti Trump Always. I somtimes read it just for the laugh. Look it up and decide for yourself. Besides what does any Ny reporter know about the appalachian area. I noticed as i was typing this Fox news said Trump was changing all the regs. to make it easier on coal cos. I guess this is why they wrote that!

I suspect that if that "NYT reporter" ever bothered to do an actual visit to coal country instead of simply blathering the party line he "Would never leave Harlan alive. Regards

The jobs from coal ,supported many ,many jobs all over, and especially Appalachia .Most people just don't realize how many lives coal supported .From McDonald's to the steel industry,to the taxes that went to the taking care of the highways ,not only Ky,but all the power plants that used coal.Obama done a lot of damage to Appalachia and made the brags that he would before he done it.President Trump will bring some of the jobs back ,but it will never be the way it once was.And no ,some New York reporter can't start to tell the story the appalachia and the coal fields.

I'm thinkin Boyd, Arlo and Dewey Crowe could give the reporter fella a tour of the Slaughterhouse. Dose him up real good with hillbilly heroin, yank him unexpectedly out of Ava's backwoods trailers and take him down to see Limehouse.

You all had very good replies to this. Olin you being where you are know all of this first hand. And i forgot about the power plants. You had a very good point there. Just look at Ky power where you live. They kept cutting back there crew until finally they had to do away with coal all together and go to natural gas. Then they found out they could go automated and didnt need hardly anybody. I know of at least one guy who thought he would retire there but was laid off and had to find another job.And he said he was not the only one. Also from what i keep hearing all of the costs of going to natural gas will come back to us the user. They didnt want to pay for the high cost of the stinking stuff they put in to natural gas to detect leaks so they paid more at first to put in leak detectors. Which will also cost the consumer more. You are right my friend this area will never be the same!!

New York is just a wee bit out of touch! Coal Fired Power Generation was second only to agriculture in industry in the state of ND since the early 70s, over 5 DECADES! I'm pretty sure it ranks right up there in Wyoming, Montana, probably South Dakota too.

Those coal mines affect people's livelihoods whether they work in the mines on not. Plant and mine workers probably make up 25 - 30% of local populations in those small towns. Most of those employees need tax write offs so they farm and ranch on the side. They spend money at the local co-op, gas station, restaurant, bar, pharmacy, have kids in school, you name it. That coal mine has impacted the economy in the local area since 1976 there where I'm at.

Realizing the entire work force was hired at the same time and many of them were approaching retirement age, they started offering early retirement opportunities many many years ago, and began renewing their workforce. They intend having that positive impact on the local economy for years to come. They aren't going any place unless government outlaws them.

The past 4 yrs. 2012/2016 I lived in Pueblo County Co. The coal plant there was running full time and the pollution from it was cleaner then your car exhaust. Wind powered electricity and solar was being pushed there by the state and feds. Our coop electric company said it did not pay and would not be part of it. Fast forward two yrs. the coop was pressured into wind, and solar and started putting articles in there monthly rag they sent out to all users that wind and solar was so good we need this. The propaganda or BS flowed like water and still is. The coal plant cut down its production and the side tracks of coal cars just sat there. This will help that part of the country if Trump can get the regs reversed. The tax payers are footing the bill for wind and solar, do the math, they do not pay, the amount of money going in to the return of electricity in the Colorado projects I knew about. One of the experts on wind and solar said we want to save our coal for future generations. Such BS comes out of these people to push there agenda.

Yes the customers pay for these changes, they had already paid to put scrubbers to burn the coal cleaner. Then more restrictions ,statements have already been made ,the gas is not hot enough if a big demand is needed, will have to get it someplace else probably.I was raised and lived among coal in eastern Ky. most of my life, coal raised me and supported my family pretty much my whole life .Whats so sad is the fact of so many people that lived and worked in industries that coal supported ,bought into the democratic plan to make life better without coal.

The power plant near me was converted to gas.
Odd how all that worked out.
Gas is sort of hard to haul so they built a pipeline.
That almost broke the R/R.
Oboma's billionaire buddies bought R/R while it was cheap.
Shale oil came in and R/R can haul it but can't build a pipeline.
Funny how things work out ain't it.
