Thermacell - Does it work?

How well do these things work?

I've read that they put off a little bit of smoke and odor. Have you guys noticed this? Did it affect your hunting success?

The mosquitos were buzzing me this morning turkey hunting...makes it hard to stay still.

I have used it in a open tree stand last year while deer hunting. I turned it on right under my seat and the mosquitos went away. There is some smoke and I believe an initial odor but I am not so sure how it affects the game. I did manage to shoot a doe while I had it as well.

The only downside I see so far is that I sit for a long time therefore, it gets used up fairly quickly. You have to remember to turn it off when not in use or else it costs for refills.

It is better to leave your gun at home around here than your thermacell. I have killed truckloads of deer with it running. I have been using them for 8 yrs or so. A deer will smell you if he smells your thermacell so it really doesn't matter if you run it. I have one strapped to my Gobbler Lounge as we speak.

Yes they work, saved me like nothing else last bow season! One of the best products ive ever spent. I do wish they would come out with somthing to make them last alittle longer though.

Yes they do. I use one during the early September archery season. I have a stand in a swampy area and used to get bitten up pretty bad. Now it is a thing of the past.

I will add that animals don't seem to mind the odor from them. I know of a bear hunting guide in Maine who uses them for his bait hunts. Bears are notorious when it comes to their sense of smell and the thermacells don't bother them. That tells you something.

any ideas how effective and or safe it would be to attach it to my shooting pouch belt when shooting trap and skeet during heavy infestations of skeeters?

Hi Levi
[beeep] yes, when the crow season opens back up in July, you are not going with out one they are awsome.I also treat my pants and shirt with that tick stuff also.Great product!!

I use them when the mosquitos are just to dang thick to hunt without them. They definatly work. Im in south Arkansas around alot of water and real humid conditions. Everyone around here has one.

Have not used the Thermacell hunting, but have used one for night fishing the last couple years or so. They work VERY WELL! I normally don't turn it on until the bugs start to bother me. I'll sit the Thermacell in the middle of the boat, turn it on; and the bugs get fewer and fewer until they're all gone. When it's running; there are no bugs! Great unit!

Only thing I'd worry about is maybe breathing that stuff in if you have it really close to you. Like on the commercial, you see a guy sitting under a tree; with the Thermacell between his legs. Not sure I'd want to breath that stuff in for hours on end. That's why it sits in the middle of the boat away from me

! LOL When it's running, it covers like a 15 or 16 foot area; so you don't have to have it right on you to work.

I forget exactly, I'd have to check the package; but I believe the butain cartridges last 8 hours and the bug repellent refills last 4 hours. I typically let them burn until the bugs show up again.

Not bad!
I'm sure the cost is well worth the absence of skeeters.
I'm getting one for sure.

Like you said, when fishing, there's no smelly repellent on your hands and especially on the bait.

I went fishing last Sunday, and was pestered to death by black gnats. This may just be the ticket.

For the refills,Walmart and Homedepot seem to have the best deals.I also use mine for chuck hunting in the spring and and summer.Me and my hunting buddies will not go out without them.

Yep, they work and work well. I've used them hog and bear hunting with success. Refill kits are for 12 hours. The butane bottle runs the unit for 12 hours, while each pesticide pad burns for four hours. In my opinion, they're worth it.

Skeeters are our state bird here in Alaska. THEY WORK! Can't say enough about them. People are amazed who have never seen them in action. We were bank fishing one time and they were out thick. Light up the thermacell and 5 minutes later they're gone. Don't go anywhere with them. Hunting, fishing, keep them in the boat etc...
