Thermo use in cold weather question

Ok the high temps for this week are -11F during the day an -16 to -20F at night. Question, how will thermo scopes work at these low temps.

I cut can cuzy's into blanket wraps for my handheld and scope. I use some of my wifes hairbands to hold them on. Keep the thermals warm in the truck then put the blankets on before going to the stand. Seems to help a little when the temp gets below 20deg.

If you need help I can get you set up with a Power Core and battery adapter that will power your unit through these temps while exposed all night. I just hammered lastnight and it was -5 without the windchill factor, and I'm powering a MKIII 60mm with an iphone 6s off the same core and not having any issues in these temps.

my only experience is with the IR MKII 35mm. We are experiencing -15F temps tonight and the scope performed flawlessly. I power the scope with an external 2S LIPO battery. I can run multiple nights without having to recharge the battery.

I hunt out of my pickup and between sets I purposely leave my gun and thermal monocular in my covered truck bed in the case. I found if I put the gun inside the cab it warms up and gets way too frosty and then refreezes at the next set.

Shaun S,
Can you describe your lipo set up better ? What adapter to your battery housing ? Cord ? Battery pack ? Charger ?

Thanks a bunch

I have to order a Trigicon battery adapter, at least one asap. Cheapest I found so far $225 with battery.. ouch!

When I had my Armasight Zeus, I built like a fleece glove that went over the unit, and then I would shove two hand warmers in it. Worked great, and was a cheap fix for those freezing nights.

I purchased Tyler's (ultimate night vision) external battery pack and adapter two years ago. The battery pack provided by UNV is a 5volt cell phone battery pack. I find that when using the external battery pack in cold whether (below freezing) lines begin to show up on the display of my IR Defense MKII 35mm thermal scope. As the displayed voltage drops to just under 5 volts on the scope display the lines appear and get worse as the voltage drops. The issue disappears if I swap out the battery with a fully charged battery.

I believe the issue is caused when the voltage drops below 5volts. So I was thinking that I might be able to fix this issue by using a 2S lipo battery (from my quadcopter) instead of the 5 volt Anker battery that comes with the UNV kit. A 2s battery puts out between 7.4 and 8.4 volts which is less than the 9 volt output from stacking 3 cr123 batteries used in the scope with a battery extender kit.

So I replaced the 5 volt battery pack with a 7.4 volt 2s LIPO and made my own pigtail with a barrel connector. And wa-la my issue went away and now the scope performs flawlessly with the 2 s LIPO battery and extreme cold does not effect the operation either.

To make this happen you will need:

1. UNV external battery kit
2. 2s LIPO battery. I use the gens ace 5000 mah pack https://www.amazon.com/Gens-ace-5000mAh-HardCase-Approved/dp/B00WQCTQL4
3. 5.5mm barrel connector
4. 3.5mm male bullet connector
5. heat shrink
5. soldering gun to solder the pigtail
5. LIPO Battery charger. I have a IMAX B6AC charger

I have attached three pictures, one showing the setup on my gun, two the adapter, battery and charger and three the pigtail ends. Take a look and PM with any questions. First time uploading pictures hope this works.

Shaun

IF you're in the thermal game and it's what you do, then I wouldn't be complaining about trying to find the "cheapest" kit that keeps it effectively powered... especially when you have thousands invested in a thermal.

I see you are from Texas....Has your THOR ever seen "cold" weather? lol
