Things kinda went sideways!

Well to finish up the NY coyote season I got 4 sets in. I had decent cloud cover so it toned down the bright moon somewhat. I blanked at first two sets. On the 3rd set I had a single respond pretty close to my 2 o’clock, then a group off a ways to my 10 o’clock. The responses again were to my howler hand calls. I am fairly certain the single circled me to get downwind as 2 deer came busting in from my right through a hedgerow. About then 3 came into the far corner of the field to my 10 o'clock. The one I focused on wouldn't stop and started to circle back towards where it came from. I took about a 200 yard shot when it paused and missed. As I'm tracking it in the scope it runs past the other 2 that were like 75 yards at my 12 o'clock! WTH! I stayed on my runner and missed again running. They all exited the field unscathed. I hit some pup distress on the Foxpro X2s and manage to pull one back out of the woods. I hit it and knocked it down at about 140 yards and It's flipping and flailing so I hit it again mid flip and shoot it in the ass. WTH!! Had to put another one in it to finish it off. 5 shots! You gotta be kidding me! Dead is dead but it sure wasn’t my best performance. Unbred female.

On the fourth set I got 2 separate groups going off in the distance. Nothing showed up. Decent ending to a trying season, even though this last one went a bit sideways. I know there’s a few left anyways.

Sideways or not, your last 2 nights out worked out nice comparatively Bob. Nice ending for a terrible season. I got out for 3 sets tonight and saw 1 rabbit😊. Heard nada but it was GOOD to get out.

Absolutely a 100% turnaround compared to most of our season. Living east of Lake Ontario has become a coyote hunter’s nightmare the past couple seasons! I’m not sure where all of these coyotes were up until the last couple weeks, I had to wonder if last season’s hard winter impacted the breeding somewhat. Then suddenly they’re calling and responding vocally like I’m used to. Crazy!

Glad you got out, Mike. I know you’ve been locked down somewhat yourself.

Awesome stuff hunt0168!

I would agree with you regarding living close to the great lakes as far as heavy snow and how it effects coyotes. This season saw Jan and Feb skate by without as much as seeing a coyote track. Then after a bit of thaw the first of Mar they were out like flies on a horse

Hey, great hunt in my book. You heard coyotes, you saw coyotes, you got to shoot at coyotes, and you killed a coyote!
Thanks. You’re a glass half full guy, aren’t you, Spur? 🤣

It worked out, but it wasn’t pretty! Up here in unsuppressed country I’d rather get it done efficiently and avoid the multiple shot strings. It would be different if I had five coyotes on the ground rather than one swiss cheesed one! 😆

Well, you got it out of your system for next season. She just took the fall for all the others. I bet they’re raising a howl in her honor this evening. Good news is there’s plenty of seed left for next time! And the best news is you have plenty of time to stock up on ammo!!
