Thinking about getting a Black Mouth Cur???

Im looking in to getting a Black Mouth Cur. I would love to get in to training a dog to hunt coyotes with me but I have no idea what to expect. Do Black Mouth Curs have allot of instinct that goes in to hunting coyotes or is it all training? How early do you start training them for coyotes and how often do they need to be hunted to become great? Any light shed on this topic is very much appreciated!

It probably depends a lot on where you buy your blackmouth cur. The Ladner strain is heavy on the treeing instinct but can be trained to decoy coyotes. They are a very loyal dog to their owner and have a lot of grit and hunting instinct, and a loud, ringing chop mouth. Get in touch with Curt Ladner in Mississippi if you want some great bloodlines.

Here's my 2 cents, For me training was one of the absolute easiest things I done. All I did was take my dog with me to every single stand all year long. My pup was on her first stand at 7 weeks old. Granted she didn't do anything but sleep, she was there. Other than that I did nothing but hang out with her constantly. I took her to the store with me in the truck even if it was a 2 min trip, she went. Till this day she still goes everywhere with me. And I can honestly say I don't have to tell her much of anything. She just knows what to do and when to do it. Personally I don't worry about bloodlines and such. When I pick out a pup, I want the one that shows the most interest in me. That's all I look for. Other than that I just treat them like a good friend and also give them a lot of exercise. I've found when u try to force a dog to be what u think it needs to be, it often turns out not as well as if u will just let the dog be who it wants to be. Nothing can replace time spent with it. BMC are great dogs. Get one, and have fun.
Within a couple years you will kick yourself for not getting one sooner. Personally I think hunting in general is so much more enjoyable with a dog regardless of the prey.

How's your dog doin, Reid? I don't take a dog on stand until it's 7-8 months old. I also don't have a dog on stand after mid sept. I'll take a young dog and leave it in the truck and go get it if I kill one and let it find it. Definitely not saying there's a right or a wrong way, that's just what I've had the best luck with on the dogs I've had.
