Thinking of Howa

Was looking at getting a new Howa Varminter 20" heavy barrel and shooting Fiocchi 40gr. or 50gr. V-Max this year on coyotes and fox. Any one have any experience with said loads or rifle?

Not with the rifle but have had more than enough bad experiences with 50gr V-max's and splash wounds to shelve them when hunting. On the other hand they shoot very well on the range for the money.

Yes it will drop a coyote that far I have the exact rifle you are talking about and love it I can hit 2 leters out to 450 ( never shot it farther than this. I shoot 55 grain nosler balistic tip out of mine. The fox in my avatar was shot with this rifle bullet combo at 120 yards while night hunting I hit it bottom jaw broke it to bits and put a hole I'm its neck about the size of a quarter. I'm not saying its always fur friendly because I have split ground hogs in half or close to it. Shot placement is key as always

Any 55/60 gr bullet will do that with no problem. Most anything going fast is going to pop open a fox IMO. My 50gr vmax load split one in 3 parts at 125 yds at 3300fps....nothing worth saving besides its skull.

I would not make my ammo choice before i got the gun the gun shoots 50 grain ammo well, mine does not seem to like the 55 grain or the 60 as well.
IMO

I have a Howa 1500 Axiom in .308 and am very happy with it's performance, but for a calling rifle I dont think I would want a heavy barreled rifle like that, mines a 20" and it's pretty heavy.

I've the Howa 1500 and love it. Shoots better than I can. I agree the sporter will be lighter to carry than the heavy barrel. Mine shoots the Hornady 55 VMaxes the best. I also agree on bullet splash with them, but with proper bullet placement I've not had the problem. Heck with the price of fur here you can't even give them away.

I have a howa ranchland with the 20" pencil barrel, and love it. The triggers are pretty easy to get set at a nice pull weight with no creep, and the gun shoots a little less than MOA, but to be honest I think that is because of the scope. The one thing about my howa is that it has a very heavy action, which makes a 7 1/2 pound gun easier to pack, but I don't like the way it balances quite as well.

Dafunk,

My Stevens 200 shoots the 60 gr. V-Max really well, I'm sure because of the 1:9 twist. I can't say about it's performance on coyotes, but on groundhogs, it works great. It's a hard-hitting bullet in my rifle.
