thoughts on a gun build and caliber...

So i have decided that i am going to tear apart my Rem 722 222 and re work it. I am thinking a 17-222. Question...i love my 17 fireball....is there a 20 cal from a fire ball case? If so what is it and how do i get a bbl.
Sorry not familiar with this...

Really...thanks for the quick reply...gonna do a little research! Anyone have any insight on what to expect from this caliber ot the comparison to a 17-222.

I would do a 20-222 you will have better brass available and slightly better supply of bullets .17 cal bullets are slim Pickens any more compared to everything else.
Also no ejection issues as with a 20 VarTarg. I love my 20 VarTarg but it started out as a .17 fireball so the bolt was right from the get go.

+1
I wouldn't build a 17 anything right now. I'd love a 17-204 myself but won't touch one till this bullet situation irons itself out. I won't even order a barrel till its squared away.

Lapua is coming with 221 brass but at what cost.... Yikes. If you only used it for calling that's one thing but gearing up for a big weekend of sod rat shooting could run a guy broke.

You could run the 35 Berger out of the 20-222 fast enough to be real effective on coyotes.

20-222...hadnt thouht of that. That would be easier for a reapeater without ejection issues...or am i off.
No dog towns for me just predators....not yet anyway.
Thanks for all the insight.

I think so. I really like the small calibers. I have been wanting a custom rifle for years. I have this 722 sitting around and thought w a good start to a custom....i know its nostalgic...just not special to me.

+1 on the .17 I only built my 17-204 because I had enough 30gr Bergers and 30gr Golds to burn up a couple of barrels , I also wouldnot hold my breath for the Lapua 221brass and IMO the LC 09 brass that my VarTarg brass is formed from is pretty good and much cheaper you could do the same with the 20-222 lots of good and cheap brass out there

20 Practical or 20Tac would be the next step up from 20-222

I actually prefer the 20Tac to the 204 mostly because it isn't a 204. I've owned both and still have the 20Tac.

I have to go along with this one. The performance of the .204 Ruger with easy to get .223 brass. Plus I think that it's a pretty cool looking little round too.

Geeesh.... theres alot of calibers! You guys make it hard to decide. If i do this i will need to start hand loading or find someone who does.
I do not have a smith yet and am looking...on the web Ive seen services from EABCO and ER shaw....any thoughs?

Where in Eastern Iowa are you from? I ask because if you are able to, you should call/go see Mike Hartman in Winfield, IA. He does a lot 17 and 20 cal wildcats on the Remington actions. Great guy to deal with as well. He has the reamers for anything you would want to build, and he does custom reloading as well.

If you'd like, call him @ 319-750-2907, tell him Trevor sent you.

I'm probably going to have him build me a 20 Practical sometime.

Your going to have to roll your own for sure. Don't trust someone else to do it for you.

Depending on what your looking to build there's several options available all the way from a full blown custom built off a custom action to a savage you screw together yourself. The degree of custom depends on the depth of the wallet.

I've had real good luck with Long Rifles inc. Chad's got a hellofa shop up there offering lots of options for your build. That said its handy to have a good local smith that you can trust too so long as he doesn't have a 12 month wait time.

I live just outside of cedar rapids...on the sw side. Thanks everyone for the advice. I will talk with a smith and see what we can do. I think this will be a start to something....i might get the bug!
I figured id be throwing over a grand at a build off my 722.

I would say do the 20 practical. Very effective on coyotes, endless supply of brass. I think you will be very happy.
