What does a gun smith have to do to rechamber this gun. Do they ahve to take the barell off cut it back, rethread and rechamber. Any idea what it would cost.

Why bother? New dies, more brass, load once to fire form, load again to shoot the A.I. Just my opinion, but is a couple of hundred feet per second worth the trouble? I've had a few, and having one built now in 243AI, but sometimes I wonder if its really worth it. But it does make a sexy little cartrige.I'm not saying dont do it, just is it worth it? Thats a personal thing.

Depending on the length of the new chamber they may or may not have to set the barrel back. The go gauge for an ackley is .004 under that of the standard chamber. So the barrel will have to be set back. The minimum work required would be to take the barrel off, set it back enough to clean up the old chamber, and rechamber. The cost will depend on the type of rifle and the gunsmith. But I would guess between $200-$350.

The barrel MUST be set back - 0.004" crush is not enough, and even if it was, you can not get 0.004" crush without setback.

Read this thread CAREFULLY before getting into an Ackley. Most gunsmiths are taking shortcuts in cutting Ackley chambers.

The "go gauge" has nothing to do with the setback - they are two different measurements - you need 30 to 40 thou of crush at the neck/shoulder junction, or the case will not form properly, and you cannot get that without setting back the barrel.

With the 223 AI, you will gain 1.5 gr more powder and about 100fps more velocity, and you may have feeding problems... is that worth the $300+ it will cost???

That's up to you.

Listen to CatShooter, he's giving you good advice. If you really want more velocity simply go to a 22-250.

The gains on the 223 AI are more than 100 fps.

55 gr VMax or SP at 3600 fps
69 gr HPBT at 3350 fps
75 gr AMax at 3100 fps

...and they are accurate.

But, I LIKE to shoot long range prairie dogs.

As far as setting the barrel back, I have rechambered a Remington varmint barrel with 1:12 twist and a Savage 1:9 twist - no setback needed on either. I use off the shelf Lee dies if I ever need to fully size the brass. So far, I am on load 5, 6, & 7 and have only been neck sizing.

Some load workups using H4895.

Nosler 69 gr HPBT's.
