Tikka T3 .223 twist rate

I'm set on getting a Tikka T3, most likely in .223. The .223 has a barrel twist of 1-8. I thought that twist rate was mostly used for heavy ammo like 55-80gr. I'm a little concerned that it won't shoot the the lighter ammo very well(40-55) because of the tighter barrel twist. If it shoots 55gr. bullets well I'd be happy because that's what I'd probably be shooting most of the time. I guess I'm just looking for some reassurance that I should be ok shooting 55gr ammo out of it.

Tac, you should be fine with 55 gr. bullets. I have a 1-8 on one of my ARs and it is probably the most accurate AR I have. All I have shot through it is 55s though so I can't say whether the really light stuff will shoot good too.

Good hunting

Tac, I have a T3 with the 1 in 8 twist. It shoots everything from 45gr to 65 gr VERY accurately. Haven't tried anything over 65grs. The 65gr bullet is the Sierra boattail spitzer Gameking bullet. You'll love the Tikka,
Good luck! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I'm sure you're going to be very happy. Tikka is the best breed of woodpecker out there. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

As I have stated on here many times, the 1 in 8 is the only way to go in my opinion for the .223. This twist in my experience shoots the most factory loads with accuracy than the others. My rifles will shoot 40gr bullets very well as will 80gr'ers. Why limit yourself when a 1 in 8 will do it all. I have a new Sako Varminter with a 1 in 8.

I have one of the 8" twist Tikka 223's that shoots the 45 grain WW white box ammo very accurately.

Next I'm gonna try some Speer 70 grain semi-spitzers in it. I hope they do as well. - BCB

I tried the 70 grain semi-spitzers today in my Tikka T-3 8" twist 223 Remington. Just like the WW 45 grain HP's, the 70 grain spitzers at about 2900 FPS also shot little bitty groups. The rifle is a sporter weight rifle.

BEST OF ALL /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif!! - the 70 grain bullets shoot to the very same point of impact that the 45 grain HP'S do at 100 yards. I plan to use this bullet as a 200-250 yard coyote round up north later this winter. Where I go has fairly thick cover, so real long shots are not possible, and I hope the extra umph from the 70 grain bullet works well on coyotes.

Thumbs up once more for Tikka. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif - BCB
