Recoil on most of the rifles from the 338 Lapua up to the 50 Cal BMG really isn't too bad cause everybody ulilizes a good muzzle brake on them and the rifles weigh a lot more than hunting rifles. I did some shooting with a supressed 50 cal and it actually made the round nice to shoot since it wasn't my $3 per round ammo going down range.
The big heavy bullets in the heavy rifles with a recoil reducer feel more like a push on the shoulder rather than a regular rifle recoil.

Marcus,
I don't mean to come off as being rude but man just go out and buy a rifle. Any rifle. Savage, CZ, Remington, Tikka, Winchester and others are going to do what you need them to do. I seem to recall you wanting to train to be a sniper so stick to a .223 or .308. The ammo is cheaper so you get to train more. Super ballistics aren't important at this point, good trigger time in the field is whats important. To honest, what has helped me the most in my shooting is pellot guns and .22s. I can't afford to run 500 rounds (or more) a week through any centerfire rifle, but I can with a .22. Sure you aren't going to impress people at the range with you super tactical sniper rifle and you aren't going to brag about 600 yard groups but you are going to shoot alot. Shooting alot is what will make you a good shooter, not a 1000 dollar plus tactical rifle.

Sure I like high dollar gun as much as the next guy but everything has to have it's place. Right now a .338 Lapula is about the last thing you need. I know this probably has come off as harsh just seriously pick a rifle, buy it, and hit the range.

What he said above!!!!! Many of todays snipers/ sharpshooters use the Savage tactical rifles with either the accutrigger or replacement triggers from jewell or timney. Me included, I use the rem.700 LTR, and would not trade it for anything else, because I am very comfortable with it, and the price. I am going to second the trigger time suggested above. It is Bar none, the best advice. You don't have to have a 2,000.00 rifle to be able to shoot great. At the last long range school I attended, out of approximately 25 Police Snipers, probably 20 of them were shooting remington mod. 700's. good luck with your quest to being a sniper. Look at it this way, its a great job, you get to shoot, have a great time and train, all at the same time.

i was just at the local gun shop looking at the tikka tac. when the guy behind teh counter suggested a rem LTR I held it and it felt alot better then teh tikka. it just felt more solid and better ballanced. I would suggest having a look at it. I think Im going to start calling around to try and find one in 223.

Forget that one...Now that I'm looking at the TACTICAL that would be IT! It would help if I'd read all your post.

One feature I like on the Tikkas is the palm swell. It feels great in you hand.
