Thanks Joe

Yes indeed the days are getting closer! As a matter of fact the little rodents are starting to show themselves already here and there. As hard as it is to do, I resist going out until early March simply because I would like to give a few of them a chance go get to know each other and make a few ground squirrels for next year's shooting. I know that some folks go out and start popping them as soon as a few start scurrying around but I just don't feel right doing so this early. Besides, my bones like the warmer days of March and later. Don't mind wearing a jacket while I am out there but a winter coat along with hat and gloves seems a bit silly for a few whistlepigs.

I need to go to the range and make sure that all of my guns are ready to go. Most of them haven't been shot since last June was I was on my annual prairie dog hunt with partner Dave. I hope to hit the range in a few days weather permitting. Then in a few more weeks I hope to be trying out some of the ammo that I have loaded this winter. As always, cabin fever has way of getting me out to the fields and I am hoping for a real good year. I am always hoping for a good year. And if I deplete some of the .22 ammo that I have been hording then so be it.

I'm going to contact some farmers in northern Idaho and see if I can start shooting the rats again. Sure do miss not getting to visit with them in the spring. LOL

We went up to Northern California around mid-March last year. It snowed the day we drove up, so when the next few days warmed up, it was unbelievable shooting!

I have so much more to reload!!

Close to sage rat time....NOT down here, been shooting them all winter, just as soon as it starts to warm up they pop out. Mild winter this year and still whapping them non stop between coyote calling days. Longest I went between shooting this winter was 2.5 weeks when it was still under frozen top cover of snow.

There are sage rats in eastern WY?

Also myself and a buddy are scheduling a rat shoot the first week of May out by Burns. Can't wait, and ordered a 17hmr upper receiver from Alexander Arms. It should be a rat-killin machine!

Hopefully we get some some more cold weather and snow! Im afraid this year were going to see some bad droughts which means no whistle pig hunts for me..

Two weeks until March. Weather permitting I will out in the field scattering whistlepigs instead of sitting in front on a computer. Sighted in my little .221 Furball, my.204, a .223, my .223 AI and my .220 Swift. Next will be my .17 Rem and my AR-15 and a my Russian made .22 Izhmash. Then on out to the field. I hope that it is a good year for the critters. I have seen a few running across the road already so who knows? Fingers crossed.

Ok, here's the report: Days have been in the low to mid 50's for a week and a half and the 'rats are coming on strong here already! I was at my brother's ranch yesterday and they were out in force. They are a little more fickle this time of year. They don't have to be out so weather effects them more than later in the season. But, on a nice day, a guy could get some good shooting already. It's usually the bigger males that are out first so it makes some better longer range shooting. (I think they are tepee creeping.

) Looks like it's going to be another great year on the fields that don't get poisoned. (We're still in good shape for fields.)

We'll have an official post on the 2016 PM Hunt but it looks like we are going for arriving May 1st and shooting the 2nd through the 4th. We were a little late getting organized and I had a few other bookings so if you are interested in shooting let me know ASAP. Our space is more limited this year. Cost is the same as last year, $25 off for PM members.
