Tips for Danger Close?

Hi!

Do you experienced folks have any experiences and tips for danger close encounters while predator hunting?

Stay safe out there!

The only danger I've encountered were two legged and the presence of a firearm was enough to prevent escalation.

Was this in the field? I sense a good story.

Use enough gun.Last season while deer hunting I came across some VERY fresh bear tracks right in one of my favorite calling area's for coyote. They were big and I seriously doubt my .223 would have done much to deter him had I been calling and he came in.I was VERY glad I was carrying my .280 for deer instead. In fact I'm seriously considering putting the .223 up for sale.

most dangerous things i have had happen while predator calling was a couple of close encounters with rattlesnakes and nearly tearing the boys off while crossing barb wire fences.

just not to many dangerous things to worry about in my world of pred hunting.

Carry a firearm/ammunition suitable to take ANY potential predator that could respond to a call in your area. Pick spots that offer you good visibility in all directions, sit with your back to something substantial, follow good safety practices, have fun! You should always be aware of potential threats but don't spend all of your time worrying about it. The drive to your stand is significantly more dangerous than anything in the woods.

+1 to what jcs said. Situational awareness is key. "Danger close" is kind of a relative term. Might mean that a bear comes in to your call, or a mountain lion, or in our case and illegal or drug smuggler. Keep your head on a swivel, know your surroundings, know your gear and abilities.

Don't have bears and mountain lions are extremely rare down here. Major threat would have to be snakes, making awareness all important.

Only other time I've felt threatened was when two young illegals came right to the call and, after searching several minutes, finally spotted us. They walked straight to us, getting into my "safety zone". That wasn't a problem as they were directly to our front. They asked for water, and really wanted a ride (no way). Then they sat down beside us, which rang a bell. I told them I had water in the jeep, gave them a couple of bottles of water and sent them on their way.

They were probably harmless, but...MS 13 very active in drug & human trafficking in the area I hunt and they were a bit too friendly to suit me.

About the most danger I've experience is a coon jumping in my lap about a month ago while I was calling. Windy as [beeep] and I never heard him till he pounced on my lap snarling. That really wasn't the dangerous part as he bailed right off when I yelped and jumped. It was the fact my shotgun flew off my lap and went banging down the hill. I was looking at the barrel a few times while it flipped and bouced. Bad feeling!

Had a buddy who had an owl lay a scratch on his scalp while night hunting years ago. Don't think there's much risk from the predators themselves. Mostly the odd crap that happens with other stuff.
