Hey guy's,

I'm all set to start re-loading for my 270 Weatherby. Any of you Weatherby re-loading gurus out there that can pass along helpful/useful info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks all.

If you are shooting a Weatherby cartridge in a Weatherby chambered rifle then my experience has been that the Weatherby's have always shot the heavy for caliber bullets. I think this has to do with the extra free bore that Weatherby puts in their chambers. Tom.

Thanks Tom.

Yes, it's a Mark V Sporter-270Wby Mag.

I'm starting out with 3 bullet types...130 Nosler Accubond, 130 Hdy SST and the 150 Nosler BT. I've tried 3 different weights of Factory ammo and the 130's did the best.

I have shot 150gr Barnes Triple shock with 62 grs. Reloader 22. I used the Alliant website for powder charge. Barnes manual shows a higher charge but mine shot great with that charge. One shot dropped an Orxy in his tracks at 325 yds. Then a shot to finish him off.

Congrats on a great round/rifle. Mine shoots 140 gr tsx's over retumbo into tiny groups and at 3280 fps. Absolute death ray. The Norma/Weatherby brass is expensive, but lasts me about 11 reloads without annealing.

204,

Are you full length sizing or just neck sizing? I bought a neck sizing die along with the full length sizer. I've got 50 rounds of brass from the factory rounds I've shot. Figured I would start with just neck sizing and see how that works out.

I'm planning to use Retumbo at some point. Seems it would be good for the 140-160 gr bullets. For the moment, I have RL-19, RL-22 and IMR-7828 SSC.

Also, have you noticed any unusual fouling from the Barnes bullets?

Thanks,

MOJO

Thanks. So far I really like it. Always wanted a Weatherby Gun/Cartridge. I was torn between the 257 and 270 Wby but, decided on the 270 since I already have a 25-06. I'm glad I did. The 270 will do everything the 257 will and more. Much more versatile in my opinion.

I'm going hog hunting next week. Can't wait to see how it performs on a big Central Texas feral hog.

Mojo, I full length size. But my chamber is custom and pretty tight. I shot my first barrel out and had to rebarrel. FWIW, it takes about 1000 rounds of full power loads on a factory cm barrel. That was a fun year. No, the barnes don't foul hardly at all in my barrel. I also had great luck with rl 22, great speed and accuracy. Just seemed a little more temp sensitive than retumbo. I think you'd be just fine to neck size, but I would fl size for hunting rounds. JMO

As far as sizing is concerned I would check the shoulders on your case first to see how much expansion you are getting after you fired the round the first time, and compare that length to an unfired case. A lot of guys do not do it, and it takes a little time to set up your die properly but personally on my Wbys. I prefer to at least bump the shoulder back a little bit to ensure good feeding. IMO most 270 Wbys. are hunting rifles, so you want your reloaded rounds to chamber and feed reliably. That is more important than case life in a hunting reload. Tom.

You can use a Bonanza neck sizer that has the sholder angle inside and "bump" back the shoulder with that die...really saves time and working the brass.
