Took the VX-III Plunge!

Well, after weeks of reading everything I could find here about scope comparisons, I finally decided to take the plunge and buy a Leupold VX-III 4.5-14x with AO for my 700 LVSF in .204. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif I currently own 2 Bushnell Elite 4200's, a Burris FFII and an older Tasco. I have never owned a Leupold and so I decided it was high time I try one out for myself.

Next on the list of scopes to try will be a good Nikon and maybe a Zeiss. Gonna need two more rifles first. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I would go for the Zeiss.

Nikon has horrible CS. Still don't have mine back when I sent it in Sept. They're saying April now... I will not own a Nikon scope. Do a search on Nikon cs, read the facts.

The Elite 4200, Leupold VariX-III, Nikon Monarch, and Ziess Conquest are all top quality glass.

I have several leupys and in fact am using that very same scope on my varmint rig this winter. You will never regret buying that scope.

Cousin bought Nikon binocs used them two weeks and they fell apart, sent them in to be fixed last September and just got them back. He's looking for a buyer.

Glad to hear you bought one with the AO. Leupy was makin' these scopes with non AOs and they were terrible beyond 10x. They have, however, discovered the error of their ways......

Baron...you have excellent taste in scopes!!!

My first scope purchase was a Vari-X III in 1985. I still use it, and have been a devoted Leupold customer ever since.

Good luck with yours!

Sorry Doc, but the VX-III hasn't even arrived yet.. I was just so excited I had to post about it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif When it does, I'll do a comparison with the other scopes I have and post up my impressions. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Boy talk about mixed thoughts. I'll start off with I think Leapolds are some of the best scopes on the market, but they've just about priced themselves out of my market. I've got several on different rifles and really like them. they also have one of the best warrentee's in the business and their customer service is at the top of the heap.

After I got retired I found it was still pretty easy to buy rifles, but staying with Leapold was getting beyond both my ability to pay and my desire to spend as much or more on a scope as a rifle.

I started searching for less expensive scopes with good optics. I've always felt that there are scopes out there that have excellent optics and still are affordable.

When I was driving truck I had the opportunity to stop in at Cabela's at Sidney NB every week or so and spent some time looking thru their extensive scope collection. They had a try stock available and I durn near wore it out.

Of all the scopes I looked thru, from the high priced imports to the cheapy 40 buck jobs I found the little 160 buck Simmons 2.8 to 10 AETEC just absolutly excellent. I now have two of them, one on a Rem 280 and the other on a Rem 8mm mag. I'm thinking about getting the 4 by 14 for a calling scope on the little CZ Varmit in 204 Ruger.

Bottom line is it's hard to beat Leapold and you will never regret the purchase, but if your ever in the market for a good scope for less money the AETEC falls into that class. By the way I liked both the Leapold and AETEC better than the Zeiss.

Every scope no matter which brand has some degree of parallax(sp)in their scopes. Most manufactures adjust their scopes at the factory to be parallax free at 150 yards.

Every scope I buy for long range/small varminting or bench rest has the Adjustable Objective.

Leupold also offers a factory sun shade that screws into the objective of your scope in 2 & 4 inch models that are fairly cheap and match the finish of your scope perfectly.

i just got my vx3 - 3.5-10x40. i really like it, but haven't got much chance to shoot it yet. wind was really strong this weekend, got it zeroed with my crappy ammo. hopefully good ammo this weekend.

my first real scope was a vari-x 3 4.5-14 tactical. i sold the gun it went with, but i'm not letting go of that scope. hoping to get a 204 for it by this summer. also planning to pick up a vx3 in 2.5-8x33 for my cz550 9.3x62. rifle should be in by next weekend, but i'll probably have to wait for the scope. i hate waiting. i just need a higher paying job.
