Torn off toenail

Yesterday dog was running around and apparently got his toenail stuck in something and pulled it completely off. I found the cap of the nail, which broke off right at the hair line... but all that is left is the meat that would have been under the cap. It has bled pretty good, but no big deal.

I have him on 500mg cephalexin because it was real dirty for a while before I could get him cleaned up.

Question... is there anything that can help it heal faster than simply leaving it alone? Will the nail grow back normal by just leaving it be? I was hoping to hunt him next weekend, but it is real tender right now and I don't want to make it worse.

I have had tons of cuts and wounds, but never had the nail ripped off like this, so I don't want to do anything to make it worse.

Do you let it air out for a day or so?

How do you apply it, just glob it over the meat that is left?

Does the nail grow back in behind the glue?

Thanks,

Kyle

Yes just put it over the wound. May have to do it more than once depending on how active the dog is. Our dogs nails always grew back. That's your call on letting it air out it will stop the bleeding.

So it got pretty infected and I took him in. Turns out cephelexin is not good at preventing or healing infections in nails or bones. He put him on trimeth sulpha 10 days. Thought this might help someone in the future when the have an infection to deal with.

My Chessie ended up in the local aquaduct a couple of years ago and lost all nails on both front paws. After clean up and letting him rest for a week we got restless and took him out Chucker hunting in the lava. and he seemed no worse for wear. And yess they did grow back

Yards, growing back without incident as well. I have a supply of cephelexin in hand at all times and have always used it for general injuries. Never knew it didn't work on all infections.
