My brother just acquired a hound. 1 1/2 year old redbone walker. He wants to start coon hunting and needs a tracking collar. I've got shock collars but know nothing about tracking collars. Can you guys school me. Cost, dependability.
Weve always used wildlife technologies trx-1000 tracking boxes and either wildlife or Johnson collars. I can't say as far as price goes I haven't bought any in a while. These boxes are very dependable and wildlife has always stood behind them if there is an issue. As far as the collars go we like the sealed battery models usually get 4 years out of one battery before we have to send them back to get a battery replacement. Tell him to check on speeddogs dot net there are usually some quality used boxes and collars on there
For just coon hunting, I would go with the Garmin Astro 220 or the new 320 and a collar DC 40 or a DC 30 ( if you can find one).
That way you will know what your dog is doing and wont be fooled what he is doing.lol
In my oppinion, a garmin is an excellent tool when used as an addition to a telemetric system. For me, a gps collar is just far too unreliable to rely apon them alone.
