I just got a lab pup, hes 4 months old. I was wondering about traingin him to go along with me on night hunts, maybe to retrieve the critter or to just go along with me for some company, cuz I usually go by myself, anyone else take their dogs huntin with em? ANy tips on trainin him would be good, thanks, Kevin

Kevin, there are two books that EVERY Labrador owner should own. GUN DOG and WATER DOG. If I remember right, the author is Richard Wolters. Barnes & Noble, or Amazon should have them in stock.

I trained and campaigned field trial labs for a lot of years. Those two books will give you a big headstart on your new pup. If you start him correctly, he'll become a wonderful companion for you.

If you goto the link below and look up a member named coyotehunter32 he has a lab that he always takes calling predators with him. The dog is great to have along and it tips you off to sounds you wouldnt pick up on. The dog also can smell the yotes coming in and he gets a stance about him that tells you something is coming. Pretty neat stuff, send him a pm if you can. His name is Matt.

Hidalgo is correct, the author is Richard Wolters, and the books are great and very easy to understand.I currently have 3 labs and I've been using those books for 10 years.

full grown they can probably handle them selves.
be cautious as a young pup may run a coyote and be killed.
You probably know this anyway.
good luck.. labs are great dogs.
