Training collars and decoy dogs

A question for the decoy dog guys on here with finished dogs that they are pleased with. I've got a pup coming the end of Nov. that I want to train to go calling with me (I'm still not sure I need it to "decoy"). Do I need to bite the bullet now and get a training collar? Have many of you had success training dogs to help you kill coyotes on the stand without a training collar? I will be able to work with obedience on the pup on a daily basis, but realistically will only have time to put about 20 coyotes a year in front of it. I am more concerned with a dog costing me kills instead of helping me harvest more but, I also want to give it every chance I can to let it reach potential (maybe decoying when it starts figuring the game out). Hope I am not running this question in the ground but I didn't come up with much on the search.

Thanks.

Based on what you've said, I'd highly suggest a training collar. I use mine, not only as a silent comeback command, but also as a training aid to change their mind about cattle, deer, snakes, farmer's dogs, etc... while going to/from a calling stand or on the calling stand. It's a small investment, but money WELL spent. It'll not only save you a ton of frustration, but could also save your dog's life.

Hope that helps.

"silent comeback command"......? Vibrate? Other? I see some of these callers have a "page" feature. Some "nick". What works for you?

I only use collars that have the tone/beeper on them. I've tried vibrate, they don't work well on a dog that is juiced up and running. They just can't feel them consistently. Nick is a shock feature. I use the beeper, instead of whistling, or yelling. It gets frustrating, when the dog can't hear you...and the coyote can.

Hope that helps.

Thanks Tony. I dug up some old tri-tronics collars from my hound days. All they do is FRY. I am going to start shopping for a collar with the "tone" feature. Your input is greatly appreciated.

Gotta have the pager feature. Sorry Tony gotta disagree. I use a brand X with the vibrate pager. It really rocks, if you hold it in your hand and hit the pager it almost jumps out of your hand.

Tone or Vibrate? But don't leave home without it!

I ruined a dog awhile back with a tone/shock collar. I had shot so much around him, that like me he was deaf to the high pitched tone.

When working a coyote I was hitting the tone with no response and then I would light him up.
Didn't take long before as soon as I put the collar on him he would not leave my side till aftre I had shot a coyote.
Posting this so others don't make this mistake. Be SURE your dog can hear the tone and stay off the jucie as much as you can.

Stay after them

When I got my first shock collar set a good friend of mine told me something I keep in mind all the time: Remember--more dogs have been ruined by them things than have been helped by them.

A ways back someone on here (I think Trapper2) told me to never shock Tucker unless I was positive of what she was doing. Seems like it's almost like we need to know what they are thinking before shocking.

He shared great examples of how to set the training situations up for success. I also read in a post here that the shock is for enforcing/reviewing rather than teaching.

There has been lots posted about the "proper use of "e-collars"
I feel that used correctly they are a great tool, used incorrectly they can ruin a dog faster than anything.
