Trapping a raccoon

I need help. Stupid raccoon is killing my chickens (egg-makers), and has killed 12 in the last 20 days. I do not necassarily want to save the hide, just kill the dang creature.

I have tried using recommended cat food and white bread, but he still likes the chickens and bypasses my traps.

Any suggestions??

I have had grat luck with sardines. Grape jelly if cats are a problem. Make sure and wire your bait container to the back of the trap as coon can reach over your trap pan and grab the container.

cracked corn and peanut butter with some good brand dog food, that's all I use during trapping season for live traps and I'm guessing you are using live traps.

Another vote for sardines and grape jelly. I've live trapped nuisance coon for area farmers for over 40yrs years using the two together.

i trapped them last year with peanut butter covered mashmallows! sardines work well, Cat food with a salmon flavor too! if all else fails, id sit out there with a flashlight and a rifle!

I've used sardines and molasses mixed into a paste. It doesn't take much, just a small spoon full.

Works on skunks, opossums and I even caught a gray fox with it.

I always liked using a bullet to the head myself.

Killed me a couple chicken killing coons.

Once they do it they ALWAYS come back for more.

Try a small can of tuna. Dont open it and just poke holes in the lid to let the smell and juices out.

Make a small depression in the ground just enough to cover it up and drive a long roofing gutter nail or something similar in the top down thru it to anchor it in the ground. Cover it up with loose dirt. Put leg holds around it and cover them with loose dirt just enough to cover the pans.

He'll nail himself trying to get that can out.

He shouldnt be able to resist it.

If he does, shoot him!

Caught alot of the lil bandits like this. Especially in hollow trees sets. Stupid wild stray cats, too!

ive trapped coons poking holes in the lid of the tuna and not opening it. I use the same can for like a month...the older and rotten the smell the better!

Yep, you know it, bud. You can get alot of sets out of it and its super easy and not too messy to use.

Just gotta be sure to check the traps frequently so the lil chicken eater dont have time to chew his leg off and get away!

We had 12 coons last year that got into our chickens. Everytime we heard the chickens going wild in the middle of the night we would go out there with a 12 gauge (this was right after turkey season so the was still a extra full choke in the gun and we were shooting fieldloads) open the door and there would be a coon. Lets just say that there are no more coons and there are 12 softball sized holes in the back wall of the chicken house.

P.S coons dont like a twelve gauge about three inches from there face when it goes off.

in this hot weather I use sight and sweet smell I am a wildlife control specialist and have to handle them all year. this time of year they are not hungry they are for the kill and or to teach the little ones. if you look at the droppings this time of year you will see mainly berries and veg. a little hair but here in the east they are hitting the blueberries blackberries raspberries and the sweet corn.

put the cage with the door facing where he is coming from. use either egg shells or marshmallows as a visual and also a trailing. put some honey and vanilla on a shell or marshmallow out in front of the trap 2 feet or so then right at the front of the trap then another one just before he trudel and a couple behind the trudle. all the same. now in the back put something else that is sweet so you have atleast 2 or 3 different odors back there.

It might not be your bait, try putting the trap somewhere better, maybe in the coop where he is going in or even with the door of trap blocking his entry.
Or leg holds where he is getting in, Remember to block chickens off so they can't get caught.

When it comes to my dealings with coons and chickens..
I do have chickens and this year has been the worst as for coons trying to get in. But i've tried everything I can think of and it seems the shotgun and flashlight are the best way to go.
