Trapping Iowa Bobcats

Iowa has a quota on bobcats 200 and season is closed. One bobcat per license. I have never caught a bobcat. The land I trap has tracks on it. Would a bucket set work? If so, what bait would I use? What about a 220 in raccoon runs? Thanks for the help..

Bucket sets will work, and they love beaver meat. Are feather attracter leagle in your state? The hardest part about catching a cat is finding them IMO. I would definetly set the runs too, that way you get bonus fur and keep them out of your cat sets.

IA bear do you have cedar stands where you are?? Where you find a ton of rabbitts is where those cats will be!!!! Beaver meat as mentioned is great bobcat bait, also beaver dams are also attractions to cats.

bigfish57 I can use feathers in my area. Can you explain more?

ADCoyote, I do have cedars in my area also. I notice more squirrels than rabbits. I will remember beaver dams...

set the low spots and high spots meaninf find those game trails in these areas and look for cat sign. Get some snow and those cedar stands will hold cats. Thickets and the such find the bunny's and you'll find the cats if they are in the area.

I will PM you some other thoughts.

IA Bear,
Might want to consider a large live trap set with a rabbit bait hanging in the back. Exposed bait is legal in part of our state, depends if you live along the rivers that are shut down to protect soaring birds. Since the season is only open in the southern part of Iowa, I would assume that you are further west than I am (Mississippi River). Bad part of our reg's is that the season opens next Sat. and the cats won't be even close to prime before the quota is met. Good Luck Russ

Yeah hopefully this year everybody turns in their reports when they get a bobcat so maybe next year they might raise it up into more of Iowa, like Muscatine county, lol...

Use the feathers as flagging. For example hang a chicken wing in a tree above a trap in a trail, or in a guarded cubbie, maybe lots of loose random fethers in a dirt hole left to blow around. Cats are very visual, much more than k9's which are more nasal comparitivly speaking. This will not allow you to take your sent forgranted but a very visual flasy set with things that move in the wind is a first class ticket for short tailed cats.

I have heard this alot but I have not found that to be true what so ever! Cats have a better nose than alot will give them credit for! I have caught cats in areas where I sure didn't think I would very open areas and not eye appeal at all they found the set with their nose and their nose only!!!

Watch rules for exsposed baits and the such.

Using good baits and lures and the wind along cat travel routes works just as well IMO.
