Trigger Troubleshooting; Remington 700 ???

New member
OK, Guys... On this new 700 VLS in 22-250...

I easily adjusted out the creep and overtravel.
But it's not responding at all to the weight adjustment screw.
This thing is stuck at about 8# and won't change regardless of screw setting.

Any ideas why?
Where can I find a trigger parts diagram?
(I may try to take it apart and do some polishing.)
Anyone have any favorite aftermarket parts?
Has Remington changed the way they put these together since my Model Sevens were made 3 or 4 years ago?

In spite of the way too heavy trigger, this thing was consistantly shooting 100 yard / 3-shot groups of about 3/4" in it's first session at the range today! I was using Remington Express 55 grain PSP factory loads.

Thanks for your help!

Mine adjusted just fine and it is new.

Since you have tried to adjust it, should you be concerned that things might change, shift in the trigger assy, while shooting? Which might result in an unsafe trigger weight? Food for thought.

Yes, David, that is of concern to me...
I suspect the the trigger adjustment spring is jammed somehow...
I did leave the adjustment screw reasonably set just in case.

That's why I'm thinking of taking the trigger apart. But, before I get in there and mess things up, I'd like to find a diagram that will tell me what to expect and where to expect it. I don't want to all of a sudden hear a "SPROING!" /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif and find myself wondering "where did that spring come from and where did it go???" /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

Problem Solved!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Apparently my suspicions were correct... The must have been something just a bit out of kilter... What, I'll probably never know.....

I found this diagram:
http://www.snipercountry.com/Articles/RemingtonTriggers.asp

It was this diagram that reminded me of a story I read somewhere about someone adjusting the overtravel screw out too far and the sear spring fell down. That was what had me worried. So I made it a point to NOT adjust the OT screw out too far.

I loosened up all the screws a couple of times and tightened them back down. I tapped the sides of the assembly a bit. I sprayed cleaner inside...

VOILA!! It now works! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

There must have just been something lodged in there..... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

RATS. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif
Now I gotta go shoot this thing some more to resight it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thanks!!

I was really happy with the JARD trigger kit that I got from Brownells and installed in my Remington 700 in 221AI. I got the varmint kit and it adjusted down to 10 oz but they had a heavier kit that was around 28 oz on the low side. The kit is a trigger and sear and you install them in the original housing and use all the original parts, safety and bolt release, ect. It was around $60 with shipping if I remember right and its really crisp with no creep. Hope this helps.

I have a JARD trigger in my 77/22. They are fantastic!

Apparently you and I were typing at the same time!

Thanks so much for your response!

The reason is that Remington threads the entire spring recess in their trigger body. What happens is when the springs get compressed a bit too far, they will get hung on a thread and when the screws are backed off, the spring stays compressed. If the bottom portion were back-bored to be smooth, that issue would cease to exist, but the gunsmith tells me that little step would add to the production cost. (he was an engineer for DuPont when they owned remington)

Now that does sound just about right for what I experienced!
Thank you!

Thanks for the trigger info, Baldie. One of these days, I just may want to get lower than Remingtons allow and take your advice. In the meantime, since this one worked out ok, I'm really pretty satisfied with the way it is!

Thanks!

No problem ME,the reason we bin them, is most people who want a good trigger on them, require it to be two pounds or less. We do not feel comfortable selling a remmy with a standard trigger so light, so we fit triggers that were designed for low weights in the first instance, and we really love the rifle basix range for the remmy.

The Remington can be adjusted to 2# or less...
It just won't hold the sear in place!

I don't know why, but I got the impression from the posts I've seen you make that you worked primarily with rimfires - and mostly Rugers. And I think that I was under the impression that most shooting in GB done by individuals was with rimfires... Over at RimfireCentral a few months ago, there was a great discussion about the limits placed on you for things like amount of ammunition you can own and even the types of bullets.

Do you hunt much in GB with centerfire rifles?
If so, do they have to be "moderated" like rimfires do?

I know it sounds like a stoopid question, but the only place I've ever been outside the US is Canada.

Hi ME, yes i do work as a smith for a shop that deals primarily with rimfires, in fact, we are the uk specialist in all things rimfire, from a bog standard 10/22, to a full blown custom rifle. We also do a fair bit in the centrefire market now too, nothing specialist really, just moderator threading and fitting, pillar and glass bedding, re crowning, custom stock work, etc.Hunting in the uk is a lot different to stateside, our firearms laws are draconian, just like our government, Tony Blair is no friend whatsoever to the fieldsportsman/shooter. I use a couple of rimfires, a .223, 204, 243, and a .44mag marlin, plus the usual shotguns. All the rifles are fitted with a moderator.

Interesting!
All this prompts more stooopid questions...

What animals do you hunt?
Native species or exotics?
Do you have public land like we do or is it strictly private?

Thanks for putting up with my questions!

me!

Rabbits pigeons, game birds etc, and the red fox with rifles, also red, roe , sika, fallow deer, we have to have the landowners permission to hunt on land, there is no "public " land, but days stalking for deer can be bought anywhere in the country. Its all down to the landowners really, whether you can get it for free, or it has to be paid for.
