i know acogs aren't meant to be used for hunting, but are they good optics?

Glass seems to be very good in it, and I don't know much about them

Reason I'm asking is I did a trade for a ar15 with it on it and both are brand new and I know nothing about them

They are solid optics! They can take a beating and keep on doing there job. I use them for work and have my own as well. I have used it night hunting before and although not ideal it will get the job done.

They are great and I don't know why they wouldn't be used for hunting. The Military uses them for 'hunting'. You can shoot a great MOA with them. I've had one for years and wouldn't put anything else on an AR.

I had one but it just didn't fit my style of hunting. Very clear and bright optics. Built like a tank. Wanted more magnification than 4x. Really wish it would have had crosshairs(horse shoe reticle) but I traded it for a Mark 4 Leupold 4.5x14x50 Illuminated with TMR Reticle. Really can't say anything bad about it I just didn't like it. Try it before you get rid of it. I think Trijicon makes some very fine optics.

They are beyond fantastic optics, as above, glass is very clear and bright, built like a tank...in fact the owners manual says you have to tap three times on the turret after making an adjustment or it wont move!!! They hold zero like nothing else made................
But there is a problem. Ever notice when you see the Marines on the news doing a "sweep and clear" in Iraq that they have the rifle sideways and have the buttstock of their M4's sitting on top of their shoulder??? No, they are not gangsta...it's because the ACOG has about 1/4" of eye relief. You have to sit the stock on top of your shoulder so you can get close enough to the eyepiece to see a full field of view!!! That kills it, sorry...wish I had better to say about these scopes. I cant even believe the military bought them. For the money, which is not a little bit, one would think they could have designed in a usable amount of eye relief!!!!

The above is the reason I went to the 3.5x35 TA11 instead of the TA31 4x32 the Marine Corps uses. The TA11 has almost twice the eye relief and you really won't miss the extra 0.5 in magnification.

I use the TA31 4x32 for coyote on a .223 and really like it. Get it dialed in for the round you shoot like any other optic and its great. I also have other Trijicon variable powered scopes and the glass is clear and bright.
