Trying to get rid of a nuisance badger. Tried a live trap but it tore the trap up without actually going in it, Trying to get the bait out.
Pocked up some #2 dukes double coil traps.

Question is, how important is new trap prep with this target species (boiling, dying, etc).
I have no idea what i am doing here.
 
I have used footholds, snares and body grip traps for badger. I will use a body gripper whenever possible. I have used "clean" dyed/waxed and dirty(coyote/fox) traps haven't seen a difference. I like the grippers in the mouth of a den or mound. Legholds need a good fastening system, since they dig so well.

Badgers don't seem to care much about human smells.
My suggestion is..., if you know where he is (hole), drown it out of get some gopher getters ( smoke bombs) on Amazon.
They work well I've been told :unsure: :giggle:
 
If I'd actually be able to get my peepers on it, it would have had holes in it a long time ago. I'd rather shoot it than trap it. Either way, i don't want it to get back under the cabin. Both for the stink and i want it's hide.
 
A fermented egg is a good dirt hole bait. Badger will dig in a circle when a trap is staked down. This will seriously compromise the stake holding strength. They also will dig to get under things when in a foothold trap, once underneath they are very hard to pull out. Short legs,wide body means trap pan placement is different than canine sets. The trap must be bedded very secured(dirt packed tight to jaws) to prevent the long claws on the Badgers front feet from pulling the trap out of place.
 
Just wash your traps in Dawn soap to get the oil off and set. If you have little time get some Zeps Floor Wax and set them then dunk them in it and let dry. Give it a few hours and dunk them again. Let dry GOOD overnight then set. That will protect them from rust. Once they start showing rust, which should be a while, you can soak them in Vinegar for half a day and they come out looking brand new.
 
If you catch it in a foothold, be prepared to do some land reclamation they are digging machines. Often times they'll be hanging by the leg they are caught by in a giant donut shaped hole. Double stake the trap.
 
I figured I'd stake off on the upper level of the retaining wall. The level where the tap will be is just dirty so I'll only need to re- level the area.
