Hard saying on the yote... looks like an old tracking color, but most of those are put on with a time deteriorating release, so they fall off after awhile and don't cause the animal problems.
A guy in MT trapped one that was 13yrs old, had an old tracking collar on it. The info on the collar was used to estimate the age. It had the collar on at least 12 yrs, if I remember right.

Thats pretty cool I'll be in the area again soon the farmer wasnt home today for us to ask questions. The only thing that led me to consider domesticated coyote was the fact he stuck around for us to get a good picture. Took 3 tries and he didnt get spooky till we studied him for 3-4 mins... Most coyotes bolt if you slow down in this area
There is always the possibilty that it stuck it's head in something just the right size and put an orange *collar* on all by itself. Happens all the time to wild critters.
I would definitly seek out the land owner to find out if he knows anything about a collared coyote in the area. Maybe contact F&G also to see if they know anything.
I really doubt it's somebodies pet coyote. But maybe.
Brownie I like your idea. Went to ask permission this morning on the cattle lot and noone was home. Talked to the neighbor and owner wont be home for a week so I may have missed out. The neighbor had never seen or heard about the collared coyote so I'm leaning more and more towards tracking collar but why wouldnt he be more skiddish??? hmm we'll see and I'll let you all know

hard to tell freind id ask the landowner before i did anything
read a story once from 1984 in trapper in predator caller about a gove trappers pet coyote interestign read shure kinda sheds some light on coyote behavior not saying that it is but ya never know also could be involved in a study
Just remember the saying "If it ain't got a collar, it's a coyote". That one has a collar, and while it's 100% coyote, I wouldn't lay down the hammer on it. (At least until I knew without a doubt that it wasn't part of some study or someone's pet). If it hung around for a while and allowed you to snap a few pictures, there is a good chance that it has a diminished fear of man. Hence, wouldn't be very sporting.
