Tumbling Loaded Rounds

New member
Hello,

Recently I loaded 200 rounds for my AR and didnt quite get all the case lube(one shot) off the brass before loading. Can I tumble these for a few minutes or should I manually wipe them off with some sort of solvent? Thanks.

You will hear 'urban legends' about tumbling loaded rounds and I wouldn't do it for hours. I have been doing it for 30 years with no problems at all. 5 minutes should be all you need.

I have never had a problem running loaded rounds through my Dillion tumbler. When you load maybe a thousand rounds of something, you can't wipe every one, but just like Jack said, don't leave them for more than a few min's. I think that alot of guy's using progresive loaders do the same.

and why cant you shoot a shell with lube on it,,i wipe mine off because i only load 100 at a time,,i only load 40S&W rounds 1000 at a time but you dont need to lube pistol rounds

You guy's may think this is crazy but not long ago i read a artical about this, it stated that it could actully break down the powder inside the case enough to change the burn rate and cause pressure problems, i wouldn't do it just because it dont sound like the thing to do but that artical did make some points just wish i could rember where i read that.

I never did it with competition .308 rounds, only because I didn't crimp them and was worried about maintaining concentricity. In truth, I was probably just being a little anal. Go ahead and tumble them.

If you clean them by hand, I wouldn't recommend using any solvent. A dry cloth or paper-towel will work fine.

Been doing it for years, too. A few minutes won't hurt anything. if it would, we're all hosed, as a box of ammo gets more rattling during the truck ride to a stand in the desert than that.

You need to remove the lube from rifle rounds for safety. if they have lube on them, when fired they are slippery & don't grab the chamber walls. This increases the amount of thrust to the bolt face, which in turn is taken on the lugs.

Although pistol is different in that with pistol you generally want to leave the lube on for added ease in feeding from a magazine. Of course pistol cartridges work at a pressure considerably lower than rifle. And leaving ammo lubed is not for ammo where it will be exposed to dust, dirt, and lint that can cling to the round and cause problems.

I’ve put thousands of rounds through my National Match rifles and the lube won’t hurt a thing but the polishing media in the chamber is bad news if you don’t get all off and it can shorten barrel life!!
