turkey call for coyote

I am not a turkey hunter but I always hear guys saying they got a coyote while they were out during turkey season, are they calling them in while trying to call turkeys or are they just seeing them and happen to have a shotgun.
just curious, was thinking of using a turkey sound to target coyotes since its hard to get them to come in this time of year.

Most guys I know just are turkey hunting and have a coyote come in to the hen and are not coyote hunting per say. Using turkey calls/distess is a good sound to use anytime imo...good luck!!

in the spring turkeys are very distracted by mating season and become semi easy targets for predators thus making them a seasonal food source. I'm not saying predators don't feed on them year round but they are easier targets in the spring and when they are most vocal as well. I call lots of coyotes using turkey sounds.
the same can be said for whitetails in the fall. predators will come to rattling antlers during the fall with some frequency. I've rattled in many coyotes and bobcats. your success does improve using the sounds of seasonal food sources. Now if I could just figure out how to make a sounds like a water melon!

thats what I was thinking just never put it into practice. season is pretty well done here but if you get high enough there is still coyotes with good hides, but with all the mating and the wildlife giving birth or whatever is going on they get harder to call this time of year. thanks I think I will give it a try next time I am out.

I only call areas where there is a problem with other wild life{turkeys} or at landowners request this time of year. I try and take care of my turkey population.

Super White, I've been calling turkey's up and down the front range for many years and I've never called in a Coyote that I'm aware of, and usually there is a good amount of Coyote sign.

As a rule, I'm usually walking and calling, rather then sitting still on a stand and that probably has something to do with it too. But I have sat and called turkey more then once, it can take quite a while to coax one in.

I'm talking mountain forest so as you probably know it's way more difficult to spot a predator when they do come in, compared to the plains.

I've heard about Coyotes coming in to the Turkey sound and it does make sense that one could do it though.

Last year about this same time I was watching a tom with about 6 hens strut his stuff out in one of our horse pastures, for hours he was out there just making a pile of noise, At the top of the field is oak brush and I spotted a coyote on his belly stalking in on the turkeys from 150 yards away. It was pretty neat to watch him work his way in it took over half an hour. But I enjoy watching the turkeys to naturaly I wasn't going to lett him finish the job. The turkeys were so distracted they never knew what was going on. I let him get to ten yards before he started to rise and looked like he was going in before I took him out.
My point is since then i always wondered how well it would work, The big problem I see is how long it took this coyote to come in, But maybe this was not normal and usaully they come in faster like with a rabbit.

I turkey hunt in several states every year, and only miss a day of season if the weather is bad. That said, I've only had a few coyotes come in to turkey sounds while calling. I'll share the most interesting story with you.

Two years ago while turkey hunting I had a pair of coyotes come to the base of a tree that a gobbler was roosted in. I could see the turkey,(still in the tree) and the coyotes at the same time. It was obvious from the coyotes reactions that they had come to investigate the gobbling, as I had not made any calls yet. One of the coyotes even looked up the tree. When the turkey saw the coyotes he shut up, but did'nt fly. The coyotes smelled around, then moved off in the oppisite direction from where I was set up. The turkey remained silent for about 10 mins after the coyotes left, then he gobbled a few more times, and flew down in a clearing abour 20yds from me. I shot the turkey as soon as he hit the ground, and he began to flop. All of a sudden one of the coyotes came running in at full speed, grabbed the gobbler, & tried to take off with him. I then shot the coyote as he was dragging the still flopping turkey. After the shot the coyote did'nt drop the turkey for several more yds. When he finally turned loose he made it about 50yds and went down, he still had the waddles in his mouth.

I used a box call for coyote hunting this winter. Had 4 coyotes respond out of 6 times trying. Just starting with a boxcall at first light, start off with slow clucks then really fast and loud clucks like a turkey is being ambushed. Had one coyote comin running in so fast after 30 seconds of calling I pretty much dropped the box call to grab the gun before he ran me over. Had the scope on 10x and missed him. Was exciting though LOL

I have been hunting a few times where we have killed coyotes while turkey hunting. Had one several years ago come in on a friend and me in South Dakota that he shot. I had a bobcat come in on me in florida a couple of years ago. And I have shot a couple here in Indiana while turkey hunting. Last year I was sitting across the field from a friend and watched him kill a tom and within 1-2 minutes I saw a coyote charging in on the dead bird in the field and he did not notice it until it winded him and ran so at times it does happen.
