Turkey gun shooting right, any thoughts????

Guys I need a little advise. I was pattering my turkey gun (Remington 870, 3 ½ inch 12 ga.) and the darn gun shoots about 4 or 5 inches to the right at 40 and at 30 yards. I am getting pretty good patterns using a Primos Jelly Head choke and Winchester turkey loads (3 ½ # 4’s) but the gun shoots to the right with every load I tried and with 3 different chokes.

Short of a scope or a rear sight how did I “adjust” the gun to shoot where I am aiming it?

As always your help is appreciated.

If you don't want to go with sights then a trip to a gunsmith that can adjust the barrel. Do you shoot left handed or left eye dominate?

Save yourself some abuse and sight in with standard loads at l0yds and 40yds and then proof with your turkey loads. The 10yd check is important if you get a close shot.

I wish I could remember right now who, but there is a company that produces an oval/eliptical shaped choke for just such a purpose. It allows adjustment of the pattern by screwing in/out to throw the point of aim where you need it to go.

Otherwise I'd look real hard at the new Truglo TG960 Universal Tru Point Extreme Fiber Optic sights. All metal, adjustable, ghost ring peep style. www.TRUGLO.COM

I am stuck on Red Dots, cause Red Dots Stuck on me....that's the theme song from my 870 SPS Super Mag..... takes care of those little issues for me and one heck of an aiming system....thinking about using it on my 22-250 Coyote gun next year as well.

ps....check to make sure that where your barrel matches up to the receiver is good and clean. Just a little crap-o-la in there can cause the barrel to be off...doesn't take much.

What type of shotgun is it? I know some of the Berretta 391's have a spacer that goes between the stock and the receiver that is reversable for right or left hand shooters. It may be left hand and you are shooting right hand.

I have found that #6's pattern much better in my gun (870). A friend of mine was trying to pattern Mossberg 500 last year that shot about a foot low at 30-40 yards. At first I thought it was just him, but it did the same when I shot it.

Does the 870 have a rib on the barrel?
The solution by a competent gunsmith would be to bend the barrel to get it to shoot to point of aim. Without a rib, the job is easier.

My preference is the glow type sights mounted on the rib. Less problems and inexpensive. I've only had one turkey gun that did not require sights. The rest have had rifle type sights installed on the rib or attached to the barrel. Most of the shooting supply places have them and you can find them at Wally World also. Get a set that will adjust for windage and elevation with a fine front glow sight. My 2 cents. I don't recommend scopes.

This is a somewhat common problem with Remington shotguns these days. Their quality control has lost a lot of its quality. The problem is usually that the choke is canted slightly off center. Sometimes, you can fix the problem just by replacing the choke with another Remington choke. Or you can install a set of rifled sights. But without a monte carlo stock, you wont be comfortable with the raised rifled sights. The shotgun was made to look right down the rib.

Briley will make you a choke that will be guaranteed to make the gun shoot straight. A pricey option, though. I had an 870 express that shot a foot low at 30 yards. I sold it "as is" to a guy who just wanted to use it for teaching a hunter's safety course. He knew what he was getting, and I took quite a loss on the deal. I've been scared to buy any Remington product since.

Contact Brily because they make screw in chokes that corrects point of impact on shotguns that shoot low , high, left or right.
